Beirut (AFP) - Jihadists cut down a 150-year-old oak tree in Atme, on Syria's border with Turkey, after they accused locals of worshipping it, a pro-jihadist source said.
"Thank God almighty, the tree... aged more than 150 years has been removed, after people were worshipping it instead of God," said the source on Thursday via his Twitter account named "our call is our jihad".
He also posted pictures of a man in a black mask using an electric saw to cut down the tree. A black Al-Qaeda-style flag bearing the Islamic profession of faith had been planted on top of the tree.
The jihadist sympathiser used the hashtag used by supporters of the jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
Rami Abdel Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the tree had been cut down, adding that it stood next to an ancient shrine in Atme.

Now they, too, widely scapegoat the world of inanimate objects for people’s spiritually rooted sins committed out of ignorant need — and instead of earnestly focusing on that need, they think they can stem the problem through the scapegoating! Which surprise surprise does not work!
The tree’s brothers and sisters might otherwise recognize him and get revenge by falling down on him!
If it was powered by government subsided, union employed, electricity from a wind generator, no problem.

Time to cut down some jihadists.
Deodand is the legal concept of blaming an inanimate object for a crime.
DEA and local police use it to gain control of crack houses, money, cars seized during anti drug operations.
There really isn’t much that restricts them to using it for that. Any DA can file suit against any inanimate object, if he can make a case that it was ever used in a crime. The current owners of the object don’t usually have to be notified. The object is not entitled to court appointed defense attorneys.
Which is a spiritual folly, and is often done out of covetousness and pride. God laments it, when there is a gospel available to everybody that really will solve the underlying problems. Anglo-Saxon and US law has always been a mischmosch of Old and New Testament concepts.
Because... basically serious drug dealers see this as a tax. That’s right, a tax.
Funny how the authors substituted “God” for “Allah”. Let’s hope some devout Muslims notice this little faux pas.
