Rule of thumb is:

Sub-base: 6” of 2A-modified stone or 6-7 of crushed 3/4” crushed bluestone, mechanically tamped and leveled.

Base: 2-3” yellow Builder’s Sand, screed level for pavers/bricks/flags.

Polymeric sand: dusted/broomed in-between pavers/bricks/flags, wet-down and not walked-on for 48-72hrs.

I always do sidewalks at 4-5’ width, so 2 people can walk abreast.

Brick/pavers (any pattern) - $30-$35/sqft.
Flagstone (2” thick, cut & fitted) - $40-$45/sqft.

He’s going to use drawers and cabinets full of EOs to rule us and bypass Congress, for the next 3yrs. The damage will be immense and perhaps irreversible.

Those branch-tip webs are Mimosa Web Worms, and a plague on Locusts, Walnut, Cherry and scores of other trees.

Birds eat the mulberries, and poop purple all over cars, decks, sidewalks, lawn furniture etc. Terrible tree anywhere near a house. You Dad was smart to cut it down.

Holy crap!

Think I’ll have my landscaper put some large pea gravel down and flagstone over it.

yuck, i don’t like wormy things. (did when i was a kid)
my dad would have been happy if he could have cemented the entire front/back yard and he always wanted a house with cement floors, drains in each room, and a hose bib so all he’d have to do to clean the house was turn a hose on the walls/floor.

Have him set the 2” thick flagstone into the ground w/ 1/4” crushed bluestone/ 2A stone as a base under each stone, and then surround the flagstones w/ lg pea gravel or small Pocono stone, to dress it off.

Pea gravel itself is NOT a suitable, stable base for stepping stones.

Stability of walking stones is the critical issue; you don’t want someone falling on a wobbling stone and breaking an arm or wrist. I’ve seen it happen.

Clint, there are dozens/scores/hundreds of types of “sidewalks” and “patios”. If you’re looking for something “informal”, like what you described, it’s a whole lot cheaper than the prices I quoted.

But certain basic procedures must be followed for stability of the stone which people will walk upon. The stone dressing can’t be the base for the stepping stones, nor can the ground itself, with some prep work.

I’d hate to see you, Mrs S or a guest fall and get hurt, just because a shortcut was done to save a buck or two. If you want, I can look at his estimate if you send it to me as a *.pdf file.
