'NSA exceeded the scope of authorised acquisition continuously,' says Judge

A Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) has criticised the US government for ignoring guidelines surrounding the National Security Agency's (NSA) Prism programme for domestic surveillance of web users. FISC set out suggested regulations for the Prism programme, which spied on citizens' emails and web use for around 10 years before being shut down in 2011...

"NSA exceeded the scope of authorised acquisition continuously during the more than [redacted] years of acquisition under these orders," wrote Judge Bates in a 117 page document. He added that guidelines stated that the government should only gather data on those for whom there was a reasonable suspicion that they posed a threat to national security. "Each order authorised NSA analysts to access the acquired metadata only through queries based on validate 'seed' accounts, i.e. internet accounts for which there was a reasonable articulable suspicion (RAS) that they were associated with a targeted international terrorist group; for accounts by U.S. persons, RAS could not be based solely on activities protected by the First Amendment. "As noted above, record of compliance with these rules has been poor," wrote Judge Bates...

When peasants break the law, they can expect to face trial and punishment. When government agents break the law, usually nothing happens. This double standard is unacceptable in a nation that claims to support rule of law, equal protection under the law, and “a nation of laws and not of men.” Until government agents get tried, convicted and punished with equal likelihood to peasants committing the same crimes, I will have doubts about the trustworthiness of government.

Edward Snowden is an American patriot hero. Regarding trying to control the NSA is analogous to trying to get a grizzly bear to stop feeding on a fresh kill. There is only one way to achieve that and ordering it to stop eating is not it.

They have broken PGP.

You'll have to prove that assertion. If so, it would be news to the world's top cryptographers.

Sites like FR would also be really easy to use to pass along messages utilizing steganography. Simply post a link to picture on a popular daily thread with a message embedded in the low-order bits. You wouldn’t even have to ping the person to the thread. If it were something like the Friday Silliness thread, or the current Undead Thread, your intended recipient could just browse the page anonymously and download the message. You could use the same picture to transmit multiple messages easily enough as well, just by updating the source GIF/JPG/PNG file. A refresh of the page would give you the updated file.

I'd like to hear of an instance where the ability to decrypt wasn't due to coercion, keylogging or some sort of operator error.

I've only used private key steganography and only on a limited basis. As I understand it, the thing not to do is use an image that's freely available as the "tinkered with" image can be compared with the base image to detect changes in the image data. I've never tried steganography with public key encryption.

My favorite applications at this time are GPG, Tor and Torbirdy (amongst a few others).

Oh, it very well could have been shut down. Because they had developed something far, far worse and didn't need Prism any longer.

You'd have to use your own artwork, obviously :-)

You can also use GPG to create a DES/AES encrypted message. Of course, then you have the issue with conveying the key.

Public key would be better, but with modern keysizes, you'd need decent sized images to be able to hold all the data you'd need. The best thing to use with stego would be video or audio. A small bit of video could hold a lot of information. Again, you'd have to source your own stuff though, because you wouldn't want someone to be able to compare against an original. The internet has made it brain-dead stupidly easy to arrange dead drops and such.

I hope it makes the slime at the NSA stay awake nights, just thinking about what we could be doing right underneath their noses with our cat videos.
