William Penn, the Michigan State University writing professor who was suspended just a few days into the semester after unleashing a torrent of verbal abuses aimed at Republicans, Christians and athletes, will resume his teaching duties in January.
MLive.com reported that Penn has been assigned to teach two courses at MSU beginning next semester.
Professor William Penn will be assigned to teach two small courses next semester in creative writing, said MSU spokesperson Kent Cassella in a statement to MLive.com.
Penn was initially stripped of his teaching duties after launching into an anti-Republican tirade in his first lecture. A student in the classroom recorded his rant and sent it to Campus Reform, which published it.
The professor claimed that Republicans refused to pay their taxes and supported voter ID laws in order to disenfranchise black people. He also attacked Anne Romney, claimed that Christians were blind followers, and trashed athletes. This was insulting to some of the students in the room who were Republicans, Christians and athletes, though other students thought the rant was awkward and offensive as well.
One student even reported that Penn had threatened to punish students who disagreed with him by giving them bad grades. (UPDATE: Hate-filled anti-Republican prof still earning full salary, also insulted Christians and athletes)
He had said before, You have every right to disagree with me, but it may be reflected in your grade, said student Caroline Freeman in a statement.
Nevertheless, Penn will be returning to an MSU classroom in a few weeks.
University officials did not respond to a request for comment as to whether they felt certain that students rights would be respected in Penns class.
He should get two classes full of James O’Keefe clones documenting his every move.
Exactly as I predicted.
Says a LOT about the school.
The rot goes DEEP.
He is a hero in these circles
So much for a free exchange of ideas and higher education.
I am not defending MSU, but there are probably only a handful of conservative colleges in the country, and even they have to deal with teacher/professor unions. The rot is in nearly every college and university.
I can imagine.
145k plus benefits for a POS like that who couldnt get a job in a real world
I got my first degree at Wayne State University in Detroit, a very blue collar place, where the average student age was 28.
No Professor there would dare talk like this. He would be told where to go very quickly.
Yep, humanities colleges across the country are marketplaces of ideas like the Affordable Care act is free health care for everybody.
This guy is basically saying, `Agree with me or get gigged.’ The leadership apparently doesn’t have a problem with professorial fascism.
What exactly are his “duties”?
Some student should walk into every one of his classes with the biggest damn video camera you ever saw on his shoulder! Oh, and one of those big audio dishes like they use on the sidelines at NFL games.
But, he's only teaching a couple of itsy, bitsy classes!
American schools are broken.
We have (long) overlooked this, but it is now time.
End tenure.
Teachers need to be just like all the other employees out there.
If they do a good job, they’ll keep their job. If they’re political and there for some other reason than just to teach, then “bye”.
My late girlfriend, who passed away this past January, was a college professor at a well-known Boston area university. She taught there for 30 years, and was chair of her department for eight years before her untimely end.
Yet she never had tenure. She kept her job because she was dedicated to excellence, and won the love and respect of her her students, as well of her entire academic and professional community. She was a rock star in her field and is missed by everyone who knew her. Especially me. She was the love of my life.
Yes he is. Now he will get to drone on in class and to anyone else who has to listen about how he was "persecuted" for his beliefs. It will be more insufferable than his rants against Republicans. Most colleges are filled with this nonsense and are so polluted that they can't be saved.
Sorry to hear that.
Sounds like a nice lady.

If I were a liberal Democrat in 2013, I’d be laughing and pissing in everyone’s face too.
