If you're tooling down the road in your Renault Zoe Z.E. only to have it stop dead in traffic, don't immediately start cussing your mechanic. Better make sure you're current with the payments. The French car maker has added a new twist to the repossession tango between car buyers and creditors.

some Wiki humor:

In May 2010, a Parisian woman called Zoe Renault commenced legal action to try and force Renault to re-think their choice of name amid claims it would lead to mocking jibes. In November 2010, a French judge ruled that Renault could use the name.

I think similar devices have already been installed in cars. It makes your car break down immediately after your final payment.

Planned obsolescence

They don’t need to turn it off. The parts are designed for a certain service life and will break by themselves.

No joke, this happened to me. Drove over to the local bank which held my car loan. Wrote out 5K check to pay it off. Walked outside and went to start my car....would not start, battery was dead! This was a 94 Ford t bird and it was the day before 4th of July. Had car towed in and they installed new battery. Went to fireworks next night, locked car and they had lost the access codes to my door combo (did not properly install battery and lost all pre sets) My keys were in the trunk!! AAA had to break into the car to get to the keys. What a disaster.

Wait until Zoe goes into shutdown mode while traveling 70mph down the highway, or while transitioning the “hood”, or trying to get Momma to the ER after her water bursts, or while a husband is parked outside the girlfriend’s house...

Gonna be some lawsuits, I bet.

That is kinda interesting. However, maybe having it shut down after the key is taken out of the ignition might be a better way to handle this. I love this idea. I am sick and tired of people trying to get things for free. You signed the contract to purchase the car by making payments for a certain period of time and you failed to do so, you should be punished by not have the car to use. The reason that cars are so expensive is because of free loaders who won’t make their payments and the banks have to get the money from these dregs on society from somewhere and that comes from those of us who either pay cash or sign a contract and make payments faithfully.

I know a guy who owns a used car lot that will sell to practically anyone. They self finance. I am sure it is in the paperwork somewhere but he installs a gps tracker on all his cars. If they miss a payment...boom, they pick it up and resell it. Lol. He charges high interest rates and is making a ton of money.

Ambitious people seek God like powers over others such as omnipresence followed by omnipotence but they have not the wisdom to weld any of it. It’s an old problem look at the history of mere people who declared themselves gods but in the end proved to be merely human.

That’s not how I understand it. The car is purchased (by an idiot, obviously) without a battery. The battery is leased separately, by the month.

When the lease expires, the battery will not accept a charge. I haven’t seen anything credible saying Renault can remotely turn off the car as it’s being driven. So, if the battery is charged and the lease expires, the car will still go until the battery is drained.

Actually, this is fairly common for used cars sold at "buy here-pay here" lots, for people who want or need a used car, but can't use the "normal" financing for a car.

For you and I yes. For some kid in high-school that needs a beater to get from here to there, not so much.

The Dad of one of my neighbors ran a used car sales lot like that.
Unfortunately he passed away suddenly, she had a heck of a time trying to follow up all the loan deals.
To me it sounds like a nightmare job, but some folks are making real good money in that biz.
