I do see a serious potential threat here.

Strangely enough, I can see why other nations would want to compete with our GPS for competitive reasons also.

I don’t like the idea of Russian GPS stations in the U.S. I’m not sure what reasoned resolution there can be to this.

Russia will want it. We won’t want them to have it.

We’re on on their soil with ours. I don’t think they should be on our soil with theirs.

The potential for a massive downside is there. That’s the way it is.

It's the last line of the article that's the chiller:

The State Department does not think that is a strong argument, said an administration official. “It doesn’t see them as a threat.”

As far as I'm concerned, any assurance coming from the DOS for the last fifty years is in fact a deadly warning.

Without Glasnos most of the land surveyors in this country would be SOL. Our GPS is not sufficient to operate in high foliage areas. With glasnos, RTK (you know those surveyors you see with a pole with an dome on top) would be limited to mostly open areas. I don’t own GPS because I never wanted to be dependent on .gov for my work.

If Russia wants a competitive commercial GPS, then launch and maintain those orbiting birds....

This is also a political exercise in predisposing ourselves tontheir presence on US soil, dependant.

I cannot believe we are that stupid. In other times such requests would have triggered a military response.

Just don’t put them out here in the corn fields. Put them in all Democrat strongholds, then cut a deal with the Enemy to destroy our cities that are just dysfunctional human squalor cesspools; they will then tell us which areas they would like wiped clean in the limited launching of nuclear weapons. Both sides agree that getting ride of the socialists and nonperforming citizenry will allow humanity to “work” together more closely on future issues.

The US isn't maintaining our GPS satellites.

If I recall correctly some aren't functioning already.

Could be the Russians are just filling in, doing another job Americans aren't willing to do.

Wonder where I need to go to buy a Russian GPS receiver?

>>>Wonder where I need to go to buy a Russian GPS receiver?<<<

Recent gadgets (IPhone 4s and newer, Samsung phones and tablets) supports both GPS and Glonass.
AFAIK these things are programmed to use both USAF and Russian satellites at the time for enhanced precision.

These things are a threat to our security - they would NOT be a target. No one’s talking about getting rid of citizens in large cities - dependent or not. Where on earth did that come from?
