A Russian GPS Using U.S. Soil Stirs Spy Fears
The New York Times ^ | November 16, 2013 | MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT and ERIC SCHMITT

WASHINGTON — In the view of America’s spy services, the next potential national security threat from Russia may not come from a nefarious cyberweapon or intelligence gleaned from the files of Edward J. Snowden, the former security contractor now in Moscow.

"In other times such requests would have triggered a military response."

The undocumented Tyrant PROMISED Putin things
would go smoothly after his "second election".

This is more treason
--- again, simply ignored by a whoring, drunk Congress.

they already have one and you can get civilian receivers for it. Better than gps for some applications and definitely useful if civilian gps is “suspended for our safety”. I’d imagine the land based stations are meant to improve accuracy.

The real news/headline should be Why is the US State Department allowing this?!

From the article:

"In recent months, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Pentagon have been quietly waging a campaign to stop the State Department from allowing Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, to build about half a dozen of these structures, known as monitor stations, on United States soil, several American officials said. "

“For the State Department, permitting Russia to build the stations would help mend the Obama administration’s relationship with the government of President Vladimir V. Putin, now at a nadir because of Moscow’s granting asylum to Mr. Snowden and its backing of President Bashar al-Assad of Syria. “

Obama is selling out US security. Again... And getting NOTHING in return.

Here’s the rock bottom, real world, line: Do not let yourself become dependent in any fashion on Satellite/internet/electronic devices. Keep your basic skills up. While Ipads, Ipods, maxipads, PC’s, GPS’s and all the rest can be labor saving, extremely useful tools you cannot bet your life on any of them. If foreign interests put comm. facs. in your neighborhood have a plan to take them out at any sign of trouble.

Don’t forget how to read a compass. Don’t forget how to read a map. If you survey don’t forget how to use optical instruments. If you are a pilot don’t forget how to get home if your dash lights go out. If you go to sea don’t forget how to read the stars. And keep your eyes on the road if you’re driving in front of me-—I will put you in the ditch if it looks like you’re going to cause me a problem.

And the head of the State Department is who?
Trustability would be below whale crap at the bottom of the ocean.

I agree. Sadly I think the time is coming when small town life is going to look pretty good.

Cities are ready to explode IMO.

The next series of riots are going to make the last ones look tame.

Russia will have to work hard to spy on Americans even half as much as the Fascist Obaba Regime does.
And has Russia recently bought 2 billion rounds of non-military ammo, illegal to use by the Military, but legal for DHS death squads to kill citizens with.

“Without Glasnos most of the land surveyors in this country would be SOL. Our GPS is not sufficient to operate in high foliage areas. With glasnos, RTK (you know those surveyors you see with a pole with an dome on top) would be limited to mostly open areas. I don’t own GPS because I never wanted to be dependent on .gov for my work.”

It’s actually called GLONASS, and those TOPCON Hyperlites you mention depending on model can receive GPS only, or GPS+ GLONASS, or GPS+ GLONASS+ Eurostar.

Our GPS is able to be used in high foliage areas! BUT you need to use either a military grade receiver such as the PLGR, or a professional grade receiver such as the Hyperlite.

We’ve battling at work over our GPS enabled handheld devices which are +\- 50ft accuracy. So now we got saddled with an additional Garmin that is GPS + GLONASS which gives us a +\- 20ft. In both cases we’re using “recreational grade” equipment while the client was promised professional grade results by our higher ups while people like me who make things happen get stuck in the middle of the circular firing squad.

I remember those bumper stickers:

Don't steal. The government hates competition.

We can now get new bumper stickers:

Russia don't spy on Americans. Our government hates competition.

I have some compasses and USGS maps. I got a GPS for Christmas a while back and I think it is in my hunting backpack and I would use it only to mark a precise location (like a kill) to return to it expeditiously.

As far as I'm concerned, any assurance coming from the DOS for the last fifty years is in fact a deadly warning.

That's true. But I still see Washington D.C. as a greater threat to our Nation than Foreign nations.
Actually I will lump our Media as the number one threat/enemy (since due to their efforts we've elected the 'leaders' we have in DC), Washington DC second, and our Education system third. Foreign nations come in a distant fourth.

That's true, but as far as I know the DOS (Department of State) is in Washington D.C. To be accurate, I should have said at least 80 years (to span the career of Cordell Hull).
