Politics' Leading Man: Ted Cruz just put on one hell of a show. (Best article on Cruz out there)

Pundits in washington simply cannot decide about Ted Cruz. Does the Texas senator’s demagoguery more resemble that of Joe McCarthy (the New Yorker), or Father Charles Coughlin (MSNBC)? Was his fight to defund Obamacare a political version of General Custer’s last stand, or was it General Pickett’s charge (separate columns, both in the Washington Post)? Will Cruz hold the country hostage like the Taliban (the Daily Beast) or remake his party in his image like Vladimir Lenin (the Atlantic)? Should we imagine him as Don Quixote, the clueless would-be knight tilting at windmills (the New York Times), or as the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man, the 10-story minion of evil from the 1984 film Ghostbusters (the Guardian)?

In fairness, the capital’s scriveners are used to one-dimensional characters and ready-made narratives, and Ted Cruz is a tough man to peg. He was born in bashful Canada, but raised in cocksure Texas. He drank from the gilded chalice of the Ivy League, but then spat out its bitter orthodoxy. He’s the thinking man’s Tea Partier, and the Tea Partier’s thinking man. He tromps through the country’s highest deliberative body in black cowboy boots and tosses off words like “Rawlsian” in a soft Southern drawl. He’s cool and unflappable under pressure, yet ambitious and—depending on your view—dangerous. “I think he is the most talented and fearless Republican politician I’ve seen in the last 30 years,” pronounced that shiny, hairless spheroid James Carville on television back in May. “I further think that he’s going to run for president and he’s going to create something.”

I ask the affable Texan about Cruzmania in a recent interview, reading from a list of quotations. “The Republican Barack Obama.” “Cruz is to public speaking what Michael Phelps was to swimming.” “Cruz is not just another whack job

Good job you and the other Texan supporters of Cruz have done. Alabama conservatives are behind Ted 100% when he decides to make his run.

Amen to that. And give him a junior senator he can work with . . . Can you Texans give us the low-down on who is lining up to replace Cornyn?

Terrific article. Worth the time to read it.

Guy is the real deal. Unlike Obama, he really is smart. That being said, Washington is a tough town. A lot of powerful people - on the left and right, will like to knock him down a couple of notches.

One thing though, he was spot on about Obamacare and, in hindsight, was one of the few to stick to his principles.

(Some credit to Boehner for giving a grudging assist.)

When this thing blows up, history will point to Cruz’ efforts as the real beginning of the end. (Pray it blows up!)

Cornyn has big bucks and has already been running radio/tv ads for a couple of months. Don’t know who can be a serious challenger. There is hope since Cruz routed big bucks Dewhurst last November.

Yeah, but they’re squabbling over what to order over there :)

This really is a good article.

Guess we’re going to have to wait until the filing deadline to ask the SOS who all filed.

There’s an army guy (and a thread about him) whose name I can’t remember but looks very promising.

I realize *that’s* a lot of help :\

Cruz is either going to lead this country or lead a revival, right now I’m leaning towards a revival.

I have been contemplating giving my opinion (which is worth exactly what you pay for it) but, IMHO, every now and then a representative comes along that can handle just about every situation they come up against and Ted Cruz is one of them. (contrary to what some think, Newt was one.) This type of person can handle anyone you put in the room with them without notes or a teleprompter. They are intelligent and know and understand what ever they are envolved in.

I am so dam tired of the type of people that both Republicans and Democrats put up for us to vote for that I’m ready to throw in the towel. Look who the Democrats are pushing at the present, Clinton or Warren, neither one have any business being President of the United States nor did Romney or McCain the last two Republicans.

We are in deep do do when we start picking candidates based on what votes they can pull from certain groups of people and then the h*ll with the rest of the voters. Look at the mess we are in now because a certain group chose our President that couldn’t punch his way out of a wet paper bag.

I understand things are complicated but we better soon get a grip on this country and quit pussy footing around playing games, ignoring the important things while concentrating on the drival.

I’ll get back under my rock now.

Makes no diff if a challenger out there in primary.

Main goal is to follow Cruz’s example.

Cruz lost in primary but Dewhurst who had highest vote total was kept from getting 50%, forcing runoff.

Cruz won the runoff handily.

All we need to do is to keep Cornyn under 50%.

The Tea Party will then turn out bigtime.
