RICHMOND, Va. - The mayor of Richmond announced plans Monday to build a minor-league baseball park on the site of a slave market and cemetery, prompting an outcry over what protesters said would be desecration of the area.

Mayor Dwight Jones, a black minister, said the 7,200-seat ballpark would generate badly needed jobs and revenue and include a $30 million memorial. The ballbark is part of a $200 million development in Richmond's Shockoe Bottom neighborhood.

Trying to keep an area viable; doesn’t work. Newark NJ did this with a stadium (building it, not the slave cemetery part) for an unaffiliated minor league team (Newark Bears). It didn’t revive anything, and shortly after it was done the gibsmedats were complaining that they didn’t want jobs selling popcorn (I guess they were holding out for management positions). Any of these projects that don’t generate jobs paying $40K per year are doomed because they pay gibsmedats more than that in freebies for doing nothing.

Wish the article had explained where the $200 million development package came from and why a $30 million memorial is needed. All of this money spent that will produce almost no permanent jobs and few part-time jobs. Looks like another case of “short term gain for long term pain”, only throwing the pain on those few taxpayers left.

They NEED this development—otherwise how can the Dems grift all of that money to themselves?

First thing I thought of. You don’t want to be the last person out of the locker room.

That grave yard contains some of the most reliable Democrat voters in Virginia, how dare they betray them like that.

It sounds like a good use of the property.

If we tried to preserve every site in Virginia upon which something historic occurred, we’d not be able to build anything.

I think the plan to commemorate the history of the site with a small memorial/plaque, but to put the property to a useful purpose is a good one.

Ooops! Sorry. Didn’t catch that the ,memorial would be $30M. THAT is a bad idea.

“and include a $30 million memorial” I think they plan on something more than a small memorial/plaque. And I agree we have been removing and developing cemetery property for over a hundred years. Having a public venue on the site would likely bring more attention to the history then it receives now.

and include a $30 million memorial
