Head of banking group pushes Republicans to back immigration reform

The head of the American Bankers Assn., who is a former GOP governor, made a strong pitch Monday to his fellow Republicans to support the bipartisan Senate immigration reform legislation by invoking party hero Ronald Reagan.

Frank Keating, president of the group since 2011, said in a Times opinion article that Reagan would say "it's time to open the doors" to immigrants to boost the economy.

Conservatives were wrong to oppose the Senate legislation, supported by President Obama, that would overhaul the system and provide a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million people in the country without legal status," Keating said.

"Unfortunately, too many conservatives — though they aspire to walk in Reagan's footsteps — have forgotten that immigration reform is the most Republican of causes," wrote Keating, a self-described Reagan Republican who served as governor of Oklahoma from 1994-2002.

"We cannot support open borders for trade but not for people," he said in the article, titled "What Would Reagan Do?"

Here we go....the bankers are finally coming out into the open to crack the whip, “get the taxpayers in line to pay that interest on the debt...or else!”

Ronald Reagan admitted amnesty had been a mistake.

He also said any country that can not control its borders, is not a country at all.

Overheard on the interwebs:

It's funny how egalitarian ideology is the handmaiden of elitism.

If the Tom Friedman types entertained the notion that not everybody is fit for a "rigorous education," they might actually have to start asking how we as a country can best support the lower parts of the bell curve.

But as long as they insist that everybody can be a future rocket scientist, they can reconcile their let-them-eat-cake attitude with their professed liberalism. We'll all be elites once we fix the schools; problem solved!

I also like how these people refer to deliberate policy outcomes as if they were random weather events. Demographics, globalization...they just kind of happen, you know. Whatcha gonna do?

Keating just self-promoted to dumbass. Yeah, Reagan did the amnesty thing but his deal was once and only once. O’neal and the other sliders never kept their end of the bargain and that’s how we wound up with another huge problem. Keating ought to get his head out in the daylight and loan people money who want to build businesses——without getting hijacked by Kenyancare and the rest-—if he wants to create jobs.

Illegal Alien Amnesty is Anti American Bigotry. Anyone pushing Amnesty is seditious and a traitor.
