NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Veterans are returning to New York City from their service only to be faced with going hungry, the head a city food bank said.
As WCBS 880′s Monica Miller reported, Margarette Purvis, president and CEO of the Food Bank for New York City, tried to raise awareness about the plight of former service members during a speech in the Bronx on Sunday.
Veterans Day is Monday.
“On this Veterans Day, when we’re waving our flags — I need every New Yorker to know — 40 percent of New York City veterans are relying on soup kitchens and pantries,” Purvis said.
That amounts to 95,000 people.
“That is not a guesstimate; that is a fact,” she said.

So, what percentage of the homeless and downtrodden claiming to be veterans, really are? My guess, about 10%.
I think that the census figure for NYC is above 8 million. The number does sound low, but that’s the number reported by the Dept. of Veterans Affairs. Recruiting duty in NYC has been like the Maytag repairman for years.
The VAST majority of our brave fighting men and women are MORE than capable of feeding themselves and living very successful lives.
This is out of that same disgusting “trip wire vet” meme that the liberals used to smear Vietnam vets who were, in fact, better educated, less likely to suffer from substance abuse, less likely to have mental issues, earned more, lived longer, and had happier lives than the liberals who stayed here and lit their bongs with their draft notices.

Life long misfits of the type frequently found at soup kitchen do not make it through the military’s screening process. If they do manage to enlist, they are weeded out during basic training. Veterans, when they leave the service, get jobs, lead productive lives, and respect the laws of society. As with all groups, there are exceptions, but they are rare. In addition, some have problems with their transition, but the great majority use their training discipline, and motivation to work their way through it.
Quite a large contrast with the “Occupy” crowd.
I’m thinkng esp in NYC probably a fair number of them are alcoholics, addicts or mentally ill
many of the so-called “homeless” have had some military service. In some case their problems caused their discharges as well as estrangement from their families
Far be it from me to slander a worthwhile charity.
I know nothing about the Food Bank for New York City.
But as the old Hunkie’s used to say in Cleveland, “dot’s boolsheet”
A very large proportion of these were discharged before completing basic training as they were deemed unsuitable. They have an affinity for combat fatigues that they never wore and badges and medals that they never earned.
New York City provided large numbers of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines during World War II and that continued until the elimination of the draft in the 1970’s. Today, I don’t think New Yorkers enlist in very large numbers.
The World War II veterans are almost gone, that’s probably the reason for the large drop in the past 10 years.
And I think you are a flaming optimist believing that maybe 10% of downandouters claiming to be vets actually are. I’m going with more like 1%. The sign-toting panhandlers (help a vet) never know what their unit was, what their MOS was, where their last duty station was etc etc etc. I’ve tried to hire these guys before but they typically can’t count bullets let alone clear a firearm. This all got started after WW II when people used to give hitch-hiking GI’s a ride. Didn’t take long before chiselers were scrounging up uni’s to get free bus rides etc. And they killed it for everybody by the time Korea was over.
Our two numbers may be closer than you think. Service members separated with less than 180 days service typically receive an Entry Level Separation (ELS). Not good, not bad, just out. These are usually done because a trainee is found to be unsuitable for military service. 180 is key because many veterans benefits kick in after that point.
So are these people veterans? Many call themselves just that and many organizations recognize it. Soups kitchens are probably pretty high up on the list of those that do. So, 1% who really served beyond basic training and 9% misfits who never made it beyond their friendly Drill Sergeant.
Don't ever forget that 81.2% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

The military has their sludge too, but at much lower rates than the average lazy POS.
My experience is that vets are very self-reliant.
I think your 10% guess is way too high. Claiming to be a veteran is a really easy con to use.
Economics 101 tells us that demand is potentially unlimited for any basic good offered completely for free.

Many employers avoid hiring or retaining prior servicemen of the enlisted, combat type. The debt-sucking, androgenous effete are averted to men.
