The rash of stories about babies abandoned and left to die continues — but this one from England concludes with a happy ending. As the Wilday family and their beloved German Shepherd dog named Jade were strolling through a park they came across a shocking discovery.

Roger Wilday was surprised see his dog lying down next to a bag in the middle of the park, and Jade refused to leave the bag when Roger called him. Eventually Roger investigated and found a baby girl, alive, inside. The little girl has promptly been named Jade after he furry rescuer.

The Daily Star newspaper has more on this amazing story:

The abandoned tot is currently being cared for at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.

She was discovered yesterday afternoon by German shepherd Jade and her owner Roger Wilday in the Stetchford area of Birmingham.
Local residents said the dog refused to move from the spot where the girl was placed, until Mr Wilday came over to investigate.

The newborn weighs around six pounds and is being monitored around the clock. She still had her umbilical cord attached when she was discovered.

The light blue towel and plastic bag she was wrapped in have been sent away for DNA testing, with police hoping it will help them identify the parents.

Mr Wilday, 68, revealed his nine year-old pet had heard the baby crying at Marlborough House Community Park.

The grandfather-of-five said: “Jade has grown up with children around her, she loves babies and when she found the baby in the bushes she wouldn’t leave until she knew I had seen it.”

“She is a hero dog. There was no-one else in the park at the time and it was very cold. If it wasn’t for Jade that baby could have been dead.

He looks like butch who passed in 1985. He would have done the same thing. Amazing breed. Brings a tear.

Aw, look at the darling little pink thing. I’m sure potential adoptive parents will be lined up around the block!

May God give little Jade a loving mother and father and a happy life, and doggie Jade lots and lots of meaty bones and a bed in the sunbeam.

My parents brought back Butch the German Shepherd, a trained police dog, from Germany where my father had served as a member of the post-WWII Army occupation forces. Butch faithfully would guard my brother in his baby stroller. On evening walks, Butch would “stalk” my parents, then leap from the bushes and (playfully) knock my father to the ground.

Magnificent creatures.

In 1975 I was driving cross country and pulled into a gas station just outside of Amarillo TX in the panhandle. The hand scrawled sign read German Shepherd pups $5 parents on premise, no papers. I picked up one of the sleeping pups paid the freight and off we went to NY. He was 5 weeks old. He was house broke in only a couple of days and he was a brain surgeon compared to any other dog I ever had.

He was a 1 man dog but when I got married 5 years later he dutifully obeyed my wife because he knew I wanted that. When my first child was born in 81 he would place himself under the cradle or crib protecting the baby as he slept. No one tought him any of this but he instinctively knew his job and It was hard when he passed at 10 years from the week that I picked him up.

It was hard when he passed at 10 years

My dad had two. The first was Turk who he got when he was an Army officer in Germany in the early 50's and brought home. Second was Zarek, who was a skinny dog that was about 9 months old and the owner kept locked up in her garage.

Zarek turned out to be the most magnificent looking shepherd I have ever seen. Big, smart and loved kids..........alas, he too only lived about 10 years.

I'd love to have one but I couldn't stand to part with it after only 10 years of companionship........

You’re depriving a dog of a good, loving home for 10 years. Sure it’s tough but the lucky animal would be glad to have you.

Verily man’s best friend.

The story I’ve heard is that, in prehistoric times, man encountered the wolf in caves, and both learned they could fight off common enemies such as hyenas much better when they teamed up. And this partnership allowed man & wolf to conquer and cross the then-extant land bridge from Russia to North America.

Sounds good enough to be true!

Thank you for this very positive story. With so much going on in this old world of ours, it is a real boost. Yes, the little lady is going to survive and God guide those who care for her. I look at my shelter dog, Sunny and she is a German Shepherd and Labrador mix. My daughters use somewhat a surprising description of her, simply she is a "suck".

Ah lovely dogs! enough said.
