West "quotes" de Toquville
: As de Tocqueville stated, America is great because America is good, when America ceases to be good it will no longer be great.
The problem is, de Toqueville never wrote that.

Thanks, but my post re West's website depiction of Obama's leadership abilities (the subject of Henninger's column) related to the video
at West's site--not to his use of the oft-repeated Tocqueville
remark. Everyone from Reagan to Clinton and many others have used that statement and wrongly attributed it to Tocqueville (not, "de Tocqueville")
West's use of the statement does not devalue the excellent point made by the comparison of intellectual, oratorical, and leadership capabilities of the three men whose remarks are contrasted in the video.
Many years ago, I learned the necessity of consulting original sources when utilizing oft-quoted statements from historical figures. There are some famous ones which were never said by the figures to whom they have been attributed--such as Abraham Lincoln and Edmund Burke.
