Saudi Arabia severs diplomatic ties with US over response to conflict in Syria

Upset at President Barack Obama's policies on Iran and Syria, members of Saudi Arabia's ruling family are threatening a rift with the United States that could take the alliance between Washington and the kingdom to its lowest point in years.

Saudi Arabia's intelligence chief is vowing that the kingdom will make a 'major shift' in relations with the United States to protest perceived American inaction over Syria's civil war as well as recent U.S. overtures to Iran, a source close to Saudi policy said on Tuesday.

Prince Bandar bin Sultan told European diplomats that the United States had failed to act effectively against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, was growing closer to Tehran, and had failed to back Saudi support for Bahrain when it crushed an anti-government revolt in 2011, the source said.

oh cynical me, could this be orchestrated so the US can't meet its fuel needs thus crippling the US economy even further? Yes technology has allowed us to tap new sources of oil and natural gas here but the Adolf obozo is doing all he can by regulating that industry to choke off production.

Damn - what an opportunity this is.

Saudi Arabia is an enemy of USA’s people and civilization.

Russia and USA should get together to overturn the House of Saud, and watch it burn, just for fun.

I had always been surprised as how many Iranians there were. I wasn't surprised by the low Saudi population. There was nothing there to support the Bedouins. The water was scarce and brackish, YUCK. They got what no one else wanted. No one else in the world wanted to live in that empty wasteland.
In fact, they have an "Empty Quarter" in their kingdom. Imagine how useless that land is.
It's was God's irony that landed them on all that wealth, wasn't it? God's irony and the West's need for petroleum products.

Combine that with open borders, drastic cuts in the military, termination of top military officers... not good.

I wonder if they’ll televise it when Kerry crawls to Prince Bandar on all four begging foregiveness.

threatening a rift with the United States

Nice misleading headline there. "Threatening" is not the same as "severs all ties". Sabre rattling, nothing more.

Don’t worry, John Kerry will come riding in on a white charger, take command of the situation and put the Saudis in their place.

BWAHAHAHAHA!

It’s culturally “beneath them” to “take care of” anything.

You are correct there MrB. I recall reading an article here on FR a handful of years back that the reason many muslim nations' military gear is second rate at best (even when provided first rate hardware) is because of the culture of having to actually take care of "things". They would rather farm out that work but made poor decisions in who actually conducted their regular maintenance; hence it slipped and slipped and slipped.

This is the more important issue. There has already been quite a bit of pressure from the BRIC’s on the issue of a new reserve currency and if the Saudis are on board, most of OPEC will go with them.

Don’t occupy Mecca. Much too unsanitary a place for “infidels”.

Instead, nuke Mecca into a glowing glass bowl. Let the muzzies rage & then bring it on.

Sick of these people.
