Why Are Some Furloughed Workers Getting Paid Twice?
The Wall Street Cheat Sheet ^ | Oct. 21, 2013 | Anthea Mitchell

According to CNBC, some of the 400,000 government workers drew on unemployment benefits during the shutdown, and it’s likely that only some of them will have to give it back — adding a few million to the price of the shutdown, already up in the billions due to lost worker productivity and revenue. The U.S. economy was damaged as well, and that cost may tally up near $24 billion between October and December, if economists are to be believed.

“already up in the billions due to lost worker productivity and revenue.”

How is it that when people who don’t do anything productive anyway are laid off, it is a loss in productivity?

They weren't unemployed, so why were they allowed to get unemployment?

And I guess I'm out of the loop on this -- I had no idea you could start getting unemployment that freaking fast.

And don’t forget the overtime to push the papers that sat around unpushed during the horrible shut down.

Some of the 400,000 took unemployment, not all of the 400,000.

They need to go to Maryland where the unemployment offices around Fort Meade were clogged with laid off people from DISA and NSA who are unlikely to pay back a penny of their unemployment checks even though many of those workers make in excess of $100,000.00 a year.

Out here you don’t see your first unemployment check for a month and you can’t even file until you’ve been out of week at least a week (maybe two).

Wyrd, good point. The 2nd page of the article revealed it was talking about the State of Oregon. Here in the DC area, the word was, if you file and get unemployment, and then get paid, you had to pay back the unemployment.

I don’t qualify, since I am a contractor, but I got to hear the guidance from the powers-that-be. Put away the pitchforks and torches, folks, they are instructed to return the UI benefits as soon as pay goes in. Failure can result in prosecution. The powers are serious about this. This is not the one to get worked up about.

Does anyone have a link to the tally sheet that shows what comprises that $24 billion that keeps floating around?

If it was $24 billion of FedGov spending, then I think that is a good thing. And, I don’t give a rip about downstream financial impacts. Any time we can cut spending at the Federal level, it’s a good thing.

I think in California you can file the day you get laid off if u want, but u wait a week from the date u filed to start getting drawing UE...my DIL just got laid off, and she filed the next day...of course it takes a while to get the money,
