The U.S. National Security Agency swept up 70.3 million French telephone records in a 30-day period, according to a newspaper report that offered new details of the massive scope of a surveillance operation that has angered some of the country's closest allies. The French government on Monday summoned the U.S. ambassador for an explanation.

The report in Le Monde, co-written by Glenn Greenwald who originally revealed the NSA surveillance program, found that when certain numbers were used, the conversations were automatically recorded. The surveillance operation also swept up text messages based on key words, Le Monde reported, based on records from Dec. 10 to Jan 7.

The Le Monde reporting emerged as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Paris for diplomatic talks Monday about a peace process for Israel and Palestinian authorities.

So? Been going on for decades. The French (and everybody else) do the same. Maybe the NSA has more resources and money so their scope is larger but this is all common practice with or without Snowden.
Funny, nobody ever questions Russian, Iranian, North Korean, Hizbollah or Saudi spying. Of course only two countries are ever scrutinized:
1) USA
2) Israel

2.34mm per day. How big a list of radicals in France can there be? Clear over reaching.

Blaming the NSA is no different than blaming the weapon. It’s idiotic.

I respectfully disagree. The weapon is the ability to collect. Choosing to use it is pulling the trigger. The NSA is pulling the trigger.

It seems that they are shooting at anything that moves rather than aiming at a target. It’s hard to believe there are that many targets out there.

Nobody questions Iranian, North Korean, Hizbollah or Saudi spying because they are the enemy.

France may be the least valuable ally of all time, but they have the right to expect better behavior from the US than from these notorious terrorist dogpatches.

Meanwhile Russia used to be 'the enemy'. However the NSA/Snowden scandal has played the largest part in rehabilitating their image.

Case in point: it's not Russia we worry about when we fire off an email.

I fire off emails and I don’t care if X or Y reads them because there’s nothing seditious or dangerous about the material contained within...

Too bad Obama does not have the backbone to enumerate what French intelligence has done against the US. He could know if he had the smarts to ask the community

Are you sure? I doubt you have the same definition of those words as the people who would be reading them.
