Facebook has defended its decision to make the posts of its teenage users more visible claiming that “teenagers are expert at controlling who they share things with”.

The social networking site says that it has tightened privacy settings for users aged between 13 to 17, restricting sharing of posts to friends only by default. The previous default included friends of friends which might not be directly known by the user.

The company has also introduced “additional tools to help educate teens on the implications of sharing a post with a public audience, with reminders as they post,” explained a Facebook spokesperson.

Teenagers, for the most part, are not equipped to deal with more sophisticated adults.

Mark Zuckerberg apparently has no children although he just got married (to a female!) last year. So right now, the intent is profits not those antique “tired ethics” that would regard exploitation of children as wrong. While Facebook (probably) won’t face legal problems for the childhoods damaged, the term ‘enabler’ will be applicable!

Myspace dropped age requirements from 18 down to 13 just before they sold it to Newscorp. Had to boost the user base to get maximum price.

“teenagers are expert at controlling who they share things with
That’s right. Except that half the time, the person(s) they are sharing with turns out to be not quite the person(s) they thought they were sharing with. They don’t yet have the experience or intuition to know when to back away from something or someone.
