McDaniel will vie for Cochran’s seat in 2014

ELLISVILLE – Second-term state Sen. Chris McDaniel says he’s running for the U.S. Senate in 2014, a decision that likely pits him against longtime incumbent Thad Cochran in the Republican primary.

Cochran turns 76 in December and is expected to announce late this year whether he’ll seek re-election to the Senate seat he first won in 1978. He has been raising campaign cash.

The 41-year-old McDaniel announced his intentions Thursday in his hometown of Ellisville.

Cochran served six years in the U.S. House before becoming the first Republican since Reconstruction to win a statewide office in Mississippi when he was elected to the Senate. He has served as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, bringing billions of federal dollars to the state.

McDaniel has been closely allied with tea party conservatives.

Cochran has a pitiful conservative rating, second only to Collins in those up for reelection next year:

Cochran (MS) 2014 48% 48% 55% 48% 52% 38%

Thad knows my father. Daddy will probably get a little pissed when I put a McDaniel sign in my yard. Sorry it is for your grandkids.

If this guy has a rating anywhere near associated with Susan Collins I’m supporting his opponent! If we are going to save this country EVERY RINO needs to go ASAP!

I, like many FREEPERs, pride myself on knowing what is going on in the world. I can honestly say I have never heard of Thad Cochran who has served since 1978....

I have never seen the guy on camera myself except for during the Trent Lott dustup over Sthrom thurman he was on Fox defending Trent on Brett Humes show one afternoon. He might as well to known as Silent Thad, but his record sure shows.

Thad, thank you for your service. I hope you can enjoy your remaining years (may they be many) with your family.

The perqs and power of a Senator must be addictive. Personally, I'd rather spend my golden years with my grandchildren.

You're in your 6th term as a Senator, and this may sound harsh, but you've played a role in running the federal debt to it's present level. I know you're just 1 of 100, but you've morphed into a Washingtonian from a Mississippian.

I wish there was a list of the times Cochran has voted with the Democrats and stabbed the Conservatives and Republicans in the back. I began to become disenchanted with him during the Clinton years and he’s betrayed the right many times since then.

I hope he retires, and we can save some cash. Thad is like Lautenberg. Essentially a corpse.

They're polling the Mooch against Kirk for 2016.

Wicker's not up 'til 2018.

Hoeven's playing cute about a presidential run

As an Independent, is Murkowski safe from us primarying her in 2016?

Collins? This insipid cow has got to go but I don't see any opposition to her.

Both of Mississipi’s senators are essentially invisible in all the big fights.

When Roger Wicker got sent Ricin in an envelope my initial reaction was.
“Well, the suspect list has got to be short. Only 5 people know who the hell he is.”
