BREAKING: House Deal Falls Apart As Conservatives Balk, White House Threatens Veto
Townhall ^ | Oct. 15, 2013 | Guy Benson

----"Plan B" and fiscal cliff vote, redux. Having hammered out a deal to shoot back to the Senate tonight -- with most Republicans reportedly on board -- House GOP leadership has been forced to delay or cancel those votes after support among conservatives collapsed in the early evening hours. The rules committee meeting, which would have formally drawn up the bill and advanced it to the full house, has been postponed indefinitely. The reason is simple. They don't have the votes:

What happened? The counter-offer's broad outline, which I've been following all day, seemed to be on track. Then the medical device tax delay was stripped out, and the "full Vitter Amendment" (no special treatment under Obamacare for Congress, staffers, and White House officials) was inserted in -- both at the behest of the Tea Party faction. You read that right: The House's most ardent conservatives decided they were opposed to stalling or repealing the tax as part of this deal, for tactical reasons. I theoretically sympathize with those reasons. The delay would look like another favor to big business rather than the little guy (which works against the GOP's "fairness" messaging on the mandate tax), it would risk disengaging the medical device industry as a zealous repeal coalition partner, and it would take the issue off the table as a Democrat-dividing maneuver for future negotiations. All that said, since when are conservatives against getting rid of job-killing, innovation-impeding tax increases? A wrong-headed choice, in my estimation. But that's moot now anyway. In spite of those accommodations from leadership and a relatively unified spirit coming out of this morning's meeting, enough members apparently decided that the deal wasn't good enough to merit their support. It seems likely that late-breaking opposition from Heritage Action and FreedomWorks contributed to the whip-count...

Shutdown does not appear to shut down anything but the parks.

Certainly does not shut down the bs.

What is wrong with default? As opposed to giving away newly printed cash we are not allowed to print today.

At some point, the balloon pops.

Until Matt Bevin answers the charge of falsifying his resume... with false claims of college degrees, he is a NON-OTION for me.

And, yes... I've said this to his people.. directly.

By not passing a House bill Boehner has given Mitch a chance to be a hero and save his reelection, and the country.

Hard to picture him that way but I can’t believe Boehner just sandbagged him.

The Conservatives did NOT balk... they DID vote. They voted for a Balanced Budget. GREAT for them! Of course, rather than using their fingers to vote (pressing a button) they chose to vote with their Feet!

I love the new FNC evening line-up, and couldnt be happier to see Stupid Smith doing nothing on a regular basis. His random appearance tonight was akin to coming upon a hemorrhoid while taking a shower.

20 House RINOs will join the Dems to pass anything Harry Reid wants.

Perhaps... well... they always have.

I don’t know. I try not to watch rove, and I was afraid he would drag out his whiteboard to demonstrate why the Tea Party is wrong, so I changed the channel.

The banks and multi-nationals are really pissed at us Tea partiers.

They have bought the U.S. and it's government outright and will be damned if they will let some uppity grassroots freedom-loving-constitutional-respecting group mess with their success.

"now get back in there and Sell,Sell!!!"

Rove was on Greta forcefully proclaiming, “we can’t default!”

Rove regurgitating the Dim mantra. I wouldn't doubt that he repeats his Dim talking points in his sleep.

Ah 20 house Rinos to vote with all the dems to pass whatever the senate comes up with...hmmm

Make them eat it and see how their reelection campaigns go next year. The stakes are pretty high, but no doubt they will cave. Ironic thing is they may lose their seats either way. Either libs or tea party will vote them out.
