Study: Oreo Cookies As Addictive As Cocaine

Research Indicates High Fat, High Sugar Foods Trigger Pleasure Center In Brain October 15, 2013 4:59 PM

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Research out of Connecticut College shows that “America’s Favorite Cookie” may be as addictive as cocaine.

Connecticut College psychology professor Joseph Schroeder and four students studied in rats whether high fat, high sugar foods can be as addictive as drugs of abuse.

The research looked at the behaviors and the effects the cookies had on the brain.

“We found that the behavior they exhibited was equally strong for Oreo cookies as it was for cocaine or morphine,” Schroeder, the director of the Behavioral Neuroscience program at Connecticut College, told WCBS 880. “When we looked in the pleasure center of the brain, we found that the Oreo cookies activated the pleasure center more so than cocaine would activate the same center.”

The study came about when a student expressed interest in researching the obesity epidemic, noting that low-income areas tend to have a prevalence of fast-food options.

“Overall, it lent support to the hypothesis that high fat, high sugar foods can be viewed in the same was as drugs of abuse and have addictive potential,” Schroeder told WCBS 880. “It could be used to explain why some people have a problem staying away from foods that they know they shouldn’t eat or that they know are addictive.”

You can almost set your watch by these “blank is as addictive as drugs” stories. We are however overdue for a good horrible chinese food made from discarded waste article, or one about maggots that eat necrotic tissue.

Forget double-stuff... the creme was not enough for me as a kid, so I'd screw apart the cookie, and insert a wad of butter.

My wife has accused me of using them as suppositories.

Send me a few ounces of coke and I’ll do the experiment myself. I already have an Oreo connection. /S

“Cookies are a hell of a drug.’

I must be double lucky then. I’ve never tried any illegal drug and I’ve never cared for Oreo cookies.

Connecticut College psychology professor Joseph Schroeder

......should be working in the food court at the mall. Even that may exceed his education and inherent abilities.

When I assume the role of ‘Supreeeme Emperorrr(sic)’ my first edict will be not allowing ANY of the taxpayers hard earned money on these idiotic, senseless polls.

Heard a sort of ‘blurb’ on Chris Plante today that someone was blaming the shutdown for kids in DC not getting fresh veggies because the ‘tomatoes etal in the White House Freedom Garden were rotting on the vine’ because there was no one to pick them because of the shutdown(?) I am speculating on the reason as I didn’t hear the entire ‘story’ but what other ending could it have?

I guess someone would call me a name if I were to make a remark that MAYBE, just MAYBE, some of those idiots that (supposedly) lead and represent us may do some real good by PICKING THE TOMATOES ... am sure even ‘they’ are qualified to do that task.

Thought that MOOOOOOCHELLLLE was the ‘head picker’ and weed puller in ‘the garden’ OR was that just a photo op also...I am shocked.....
