House GOP to try to counter Senate debt limit plan

WASHINGTON (AP) — House GOP leaders unveiled their own plan Tuesday to counter an emerging Senate plan to reopen the government and forestall an economy-rattling default on U.S. obligations.

The bill would repeal a new tax on medical devices and take away lawmakers' federal health care subsidies in addition to funding the government through Jan. 15 and giving Treasury the ability to borrow normally through Feb. 7.

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., said Republicans plan to pass the measure later Tuesday. It could prove tricky because Democrats probably won't support it.

The House move comes after conservative lawmakers rebelled at the outlines of an emerging Senate plan by Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and GOP leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. Those two hoped to seal an agreement on Tuesday, just two days before the Treasury Department says it will run out of borrowing capacity.

The emerging Senate measure would reopen the government through Jan. 15 and permit the Treasury to borrow normally until early to mid-February, easing dual crises that have sapped confidence in the economy and taken a sledgehammer to the GOP's poll numbers.

"The general framework is there" between Reid and McConnell, said Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn. He said conversations with the House were continuing and he thought it would be midday Tuesday at the earliest before a plan was finalized.

Buy used from garage sales. Starve the beast.

It is up to the people now that all politicians are part of the problem.

The Latest from CNN (I know, I know)

Anyway this is interesting:

3:45 PM

House Republicans have dropped two demands related to Obamacare from their proposal to end the fiscal stalemate in Washington, sources told CNN. These include a proposal to delay the medical device tax and another to tighten income verification of those seeking subsidies to purchase health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. Separately, Republican Rep. Devin Nunes of California told CNN's Dana Bash that he expects the House to vote on Tuesday night on its plan to reopen the government and avoid a possible U.S. default.

The deadline for increasing the debt ceiling is Thursday, according to the Treasury, and economists warn that failure to act in time would spike interest rates with possible catastrophic impact at home and abroad. However, House Republicans were considering their own proposal that would tack on provisions changing President Barack Obama's signature health care reforms in what appeared to be a last-gasp effort to influence the proposed Senate agreement. According to GOP sources and confirmed by Republican Rep. Darrell Issa of California, the House plan under consideration would include most of what is in the Senate proposal while adding a provision to suspend an Obamacare tax on medical devices for two years and remove federal health care subsidies for Obama and legislators when they obtain health coverage under the reforms

Who cares about the medical device tax? What world are we living in?

Obamacare is the death of America. If it is not repealed then all is lost.

America is asking for economic disaster thanks to trillions of ever-more-worthless dollars being printed and loaned out.

Best way to handle this is to face reality.

It won't be pretty, but it beats our being ever more sure that a WW-III will happen.

The Tea Party is looking better and better ... every day.

The repubs can brag that they got what they wanted but

Unfortunately I fear that what the Republicans want, at least the "leaders," is for obamacare to to be protected and to provide some protection for the Democrats' electoral prospects next year. They really are acting as the designated opposition division of the Democrat Party and seem to be currently tasked with bringing the recalcitrant members along, the ones who think they are part of a separate political party.

Well stated. We’re in the end game for communists running our government. They’re playing for all the marbles and the ends justifies the means in their collective minds.

Just on CNN.... All the on air folks might just as well wear DNC T shirts, I mean if they could only hear themselves.

When it`s not crunch time, they try and pretend they don’t have an agenda, but the last few days they are as bad or worse than MSNBC if that was possible.

To MSNBC credit they gave up even the appearance of attempting to be balanced, but CNN says they are better, what a joke.

Every former and/or disgruntled Rep has been rounded up to give the Rep point of view on stuff, totally embarrassing to watch

"The problem is the debt, not the debt ceiling. Balance the budget, the problem will take care of itself."

Raising import tariffs and putting Americans back to work would go a long way towards balancing the budget.
