House GOP to try to counter Senate debt limit plan

WASHINGTON (AP) — House GOP leaders unveiled their own plan Tuesday to counter an emerging Senate plan to reopen the government and forestall an economy-rattling default on U.S. obligations.

The bill would repeal a new tax on medical devices and take away lawmakers' federal health care subsidies in addition to funding the government through Jan. 15 and giving Treasury the ability to borrow normally through Feb. 7.

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., said Republicans plan to pass the measure later Tuesday. It could prove tricky because Democrats probably won't support it.

The House move comes after conservative lawmakers rebelled at the outlines of an emerging Senate plan by Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and GOP leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. Those two hoped to seal an agreement on Tuesday, just two days before the Treasury Department says it will run out of borrowing capacity.

The emerging Senate measure would reopen the government through Jan. 15 and permit the Treasury to borrow normally until early to mid-February, easing dual crises that have sapped confidence in the economy and taken a sledgehammer to the GOP's poll numbers.

"The general framework is there" between Reid and McConnell, said Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn. He said conversations with the House were continuing and he thought it would be midday Tuesday at the earliest before a plan was finalized.

RE :”The bill would repeal a new tax on medical devices and take away lawmakers’ federal health care subsidies in addition to funding the government through Jan. 15 and giving Treasury the ability to borrow normally through Feb. 7.”

Taking away the federal health care subsidies would at least be getting something out of the whole shutdown, since the shutdown didnt automatically cut off Obama-care funding.(who da guessed)

Reid and McConnel’s plans would comply with Obama’s demand that the GOP get NOTHING.

I thought the House already passed this, but maybe they just talked about it.

Obamacare is not ready to be implemented. Politics aside the damn thing does not work. You cannot get through their website and the insurance companies are totally confused as to the correct pricing for one. Spoke to blue cross yesterday and was told that they are all confused there. How in the heck can we get anyone to listen! I am beyond frustrated.

Hold everything. How about a Balanced Budget Amendment! And how about a BBA today... No need to propose it, no need congress (or Article 5) to initiate it, no need for 3/4 of the states to ratify it. Today!

House - Do NOTHING! It's effectively the BBA Now! The feral govt forced to live within its means.

They’re playing their game. Responding with counter proposals. They should be starting the 2014 House campaign now. Attacking the Demo-Coms (they can’t even call them socialists) and the regime with a barrage of government waste attacks and policy effects (energy costs to the consumer like coal fired electric production ) not only on what the buraucracies are doing but the extrordinary efforts this regime is using to focus on government reliance . Theme being “Do you really need government to involve itself in every aspect of life”...

Do a simple bill of raising the debt limit 200 billion. More than enough room for treasury to work around uneven revenues while the government is closed, and keep it closed until you get some reasonable consessions. Simple.

What would make anyone think that?

The HOUSE is in charge.

They should tell the Senate and the President to go to hell until they come back with something just vaguely logical.

You DO NOT keep funding your kid’s out of control credit card while he’s away a college.

You DO NOT penalize someone for NOT being able to use a website.

This is freaking logic! What the hell is wrong with these people!??

Pubbies in the House....give Obama nothing!!! Let him take the country into default...he owns it!!! Actually...your move is a good one because Democrats will reject it outright!!! The Senate deal spnosored by traitors RINOs is DOA!!!

Then Pubbies stand pat and do nothing!!! And....if you need more support for your spine and backbone...remember them polls that blame you for this mess!!! You know who that is blaming you? Republican conservatives becasue you will not stand up to Obama, his Obamabot Democrats , his Obamabot media and your low life, dirt bag, RINOs!!! Stand strong!!! Give Obama, ZILCH!!!

And......New Jersey voters....tomorrow, election day in NJ...vote for Steve Lonegan for US Senator from NJ!!! You can destroy the entire Democrat Party and Obama by voting for Steve Lonegan for US Senate over dirt bag, lowlife, criminal thug, Obamabot clone, Cory (lie) Booker!!!

Why delay the tax 2 years?

If it’s a dumb thing now it’s just as dumb 2 years later.
.

Agree. Repubs need to make demos enforce 100% of the new law. Americans need to drink it all in. They need to make that sorry ass president enforce the law. If they did that, demos might not do so well in future elections.

Watch for clown to blow right through the borrowing limit, continuing to borrow to feed the wagon riders and thereby precipitating a Constitutional CRISIS - he "works" best in crisis mode

FOX NEWS ALERT

House members are giving a news presser now.

Not sure what they decided, because they are talking in generalities. They want fairness and everythone to be treated equal. They are meeting with members later today to present their ‘deal’.

[It was much ado signifying nothing, apparently.]

I agree, but good luck with that. there are too many republicans who enjoy being able to keep their staffers from experiencing the pain idiot Americans voted for. Instead they'll save the Dems from themselves. Always playing checkers while rats are playing chess.

Reid is “sooo disappointed”.....on the floor now carrying on as usual and specifically spotting the “Tea Party” Republicans as the reason for all of this.

However, Obama has a trump card and this was raised by Durbin as he spoke...’Executive Decision’ to “Save the Country”. If OB does this it all will be completely on his plate.

I don’t believe they are folding......They’re putting this right in Obamas lap because Reid said they won’t sign it...so Durbin mentioned “Executive Decision”.....

Let’s see if Obama will take the full blown deal on his plate or not....they are forcing Obama either to have the Dems sign on the dotted line...or Obama has the full weight of it on his plate.
