I don't suppose that the Philippine government and contractors are interested in BUILDING "earthquake proof" structures.

As though third-world countries or anyone else has infinite money to replace all buildings and bridges.

Large quake shakes Philippines; no tsunami threat to Hawaii

A large earthquake has struck the Philippines but did not generate a tsunami threat for Hawaii, officials said today.

The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2, was centered 3 miles east of Balilihan in Bohol province at 8:13 a.m. Tuesday at the epicenter (2:13 p.m. Monday in Hawaii) at a depth of 35 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach said “no destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data. However, earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter.”

The initial temblor was followed by a magnitude 5,4 quake in the same area about 15 minutes later, according to the USGS.

Ray, the depth is 56.8 KM or 35 miles deep and is considered a shallow quake.

From USGS:

Shallow earthquakes are between 0 and 70 km deep; intermediate earthquakes, 70 - 300 km deep; and deep earthquakes, 300 - 700 km deep. In general, the term "deep-focus earthquakes" is applied to earthquakes deeper than 70 km. All earthquakes deeper than 70 km are localized within great slabs of shallow lithosphere that are sinking into the Earth's mantle.

Cebu City : I’ve been in several earthquakes in my life. This was by far the strongest & most frightening. I thought my building would fall down. Many aftershocks continuing every few minutes. Power is out everywhere. Even our generator has not come on yet.

Hi Ernest! Wish I had seen you earlier, would have pinged to my post below.

Unfortunately this is a major quake and is also a shallow quake at 35 miles deep (56.8 KM).

from USGS Measuring Earthquakes - 56.8 KM or 35 miles deep is considered a shallow quake
