GOP: Democrats' request for higher spending hurting deal chances
Bradenton Herald (from McClatchy) ^ | Oct 13, 2013 | Anita Kumar and William Douglas

WASHINGTON — Several Republican senators said Sunday a Democratic request to increase government spending is hurting chances of a deal to end the 13-day-old shutdown.

Leaders of the Democratic-led Senate were dismissive of a proposal Saturday, in part, because it kept in place for too long the automatic spending cuts that went into effect earlier this year. Another round of those decade-long cuts -- dubbed the sequester and approved by Congress and the White House in 2011 -- is expected in January.

The Republican complaints came as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., spoke briefly Sunday afternoon but failed to reach a deal to end the shutdown or find common ground that would allow Congress to approve raising the federal debt ceiling.

“Our discussions were substantive and we’ll continue those discussions,” Reid said before the Senate adjourned Sunday. “I’m optimistic about the prospects for a positive conclusion to the issues before this country today.”

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky. said that maintaining spending cuts is the same for Republicans as maintaining the Affordable Care Act is for Democrats.

"They’re all about Obamacare being the law of the land, but so’s the sequester,” he said on CNN’s State of the Union with Candy Crowley. “If we exceed that, it’s real big step in the wrong direction." . . .

This is the part I don't get. Republicans should be taking advantage of every single debt ceiling impasse in order to attain more spending cuts. The fact that Democrats would even demand spending increases shows that the Republicans have lost focus on the one issue that will resonate with voters - more efficient and fiscally responsible government.

Someone needs to take the lead at this point, and echo from the mountain tops that increased spending is what got us into this mess, yet Democrats are calling for more of the same. At the bare minimum, Republicans should demand a freeze in spending. And by 'freeze', I mean doing away with the automatic increases that occur from year to year.

This is classic Democrat politics. They live to spend other people’s money. It’s how they buy their constituency off.

Government spending needs to be cut 27% eliminate the deficit. The problem with the partial government shutdown is it doesn’t cut enough and it isn’t permanent.

Dems think they have the upper hand and can make demands on the GOP TO GIVE THEM a debt limit increase.

They figure the GOP is getting all the blame so if the markets tank this week then GOP in House in Senate, minus some in 100% safe districts, will BEG Obama and Reid for ANY deal as they soil their pants.

Guess defunding Obama-care isnt even being discussed anymore.

NO ONE in America is complaining about the 93% of EPA “non-essential” employees who have not worked for 13 days. So just FIRE THEM! Bingo...no more debt ceiling problem.

That’s not open for debate. The sequester already is permanent. We should push for more cuts from there.

The RINO’s jumped out and told the liberal socialist they would not allow the government to default on its debt! You just told your opponents you are going to cave and will not hold the line in order to reduce spending and regaining control over this out of control government!

Why wouldn't the liberal socialist demand an end to the sequester (liberal idea) since the RINO’s have already caved on every prior proposal and demand, e.g. defund Obamacare, etc..

If the conservatives were supported by every GOPe in their demands, this would have played out much differently, but, as always, the RINO’s cave, give the liberal socialist every thing they demand, and now, the RINO’s are blaming the Tea Party Americans for the defeat.

Anyone who negotiates with themselves, expecting the liberal socialist to capitulate on a deal, is completely delusional and devoid of understanding who to regain control over this out of control government.

2014 will see the slaughter of many more RINO’s by the American voter who understands that the GOP needs to be cleaned up before the GOP can stand strong against these liberal socialist who have hijacked this Nation.

The shut down started over defunding Obamacare, the debt ceiling would not be raised until spending was brought under control. Now the RINO’s have dropped their demand for defunding Obamacare, caved on spending cuts, will open the government and raise the debt limit for three (3) months just for the promise from the liberal socialist to agree to talk about spending cuts in the future!

Now the liberal socialist have just stuck their middle finger in the face of Boehner and McConnell and are now demanding and end to the law of sequester automatic federal cuts on spending!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hell, if the RINO’s are allowed to continue, the RINO’s will become Liberal socialist and give the US House of Representatives to the liberal socialist so they can pass amnesty for Mexican Nationals who broke into our Country, and National firearm Registry and finally, raise Americans taxes to offset further spending by the liberal socialist with even more tax dollars supporting Obamacare!

Wait for it, its coming, five, four, three, two, . . .

A “non-essential” employee in the private sector doesn’t have a job.

These people are nothing but parasites.

"They’re all about Obamacare being the law of the land, but so’s the sequester," [Sen. Rand Paul] said on CNN’s State of the Union with Candy Crowley. “If we exceed that, it’s real big step in the wrong direction."

This sums it up perfectly, I think.

Many in the MSM are trying to spin this as a Republican shutdown; but it should be transparent, to anyone who follows it (even remotely), that it is the Democrats who remain intransigent; and who want to prolong the government shutdown, for purely political purposes...

I always say that the Feral gov should be pared down to Article 1 Section 8. But, On the other Hand, it starts off with "The Congress shall have Power To...". In other words, they are granted power to do things, they can do the items in the limited list... or not. Better that they do NONE of them, if they can't be limited to the list.

the debt ceiling IS the balance budget amendment. Anyone who favors increasing the debt ceiling were never serious about a balance budget

I guess republicans don’t know how to negotiate because as private citizens they never had to. They always got what they wanted. The way to negotiate is tell your opponent “Let me think about it and I’ll call you back.” But don’t call. Eventually your opponent will call you. Then you say “I can’t agree to that.” Now your opponent will ask you “What can you agree with?” It’s the old saying, ‘He who blinks first, loses.”

I got a feeling it’s Reid’s phone that keeps ringing.

The GOP messaging collapsed once Boehner decided to surrender last week. The GOP has no message now. Total cluster. The Dems are beating them like a pinata. The GOP leadership are getting exactly what they deserve for their surrender monkey routine.

The debt ceiling is too abstract battle is too astract and the Dems/MSM can spin it. It’s much better to do what Cruz was doing and hammer on a few easy to understand things. Obamacare exemptions for Corps and Congress but not Main Street is a winner for the GOP but they refuse to go to the mat for it.

They need to come up with a few concise talking points and stick to them, just as those obnoxious liberals do. Pick a buzz word and grind it in. When you have infrequent opportunity to get your point across, you’d better be short and sweet and easy enough for the dopes in the audience to understand.

When Obama didnt blink and pass that defunding Obama-care CR through Senate and sign it into law they were left scrambing for a plan B.

Plans B+C Delaying it was an easier argument to win than defunding (as obama did that himself) but Obama and Dems kept shooting down plan A even after it was abandoned , in fact they still are.

After that when the GOP abandoned doing anything to Obama-care at all they looked/now look weak, aimless and confused. It all looks pointless.

The MSM wants Obama to give the the GOP that Medical device tax as a bone so they can claim they got something, but right now Reid is acting like he wants the GOP to kiss his feet in total humilation and beg for forgiveness.
