Maine shoppers unable to use food stamp cards

Customers at BJ’s Wholesale Club, Hannaford supermarkets and other grocery stores in Maine abandoned their carts at registers and headed home empty-handed earlier Saturday.

Lou Craig, the owner of College Carry-Out in Augusta, said he had to turn away about 50 customers Saturday because the system wouldn’t accept their EBT cards.

“They just won’t go through,” he said. “It just prints out ‘declined.’ ”

Craig said its a particularly busy time for those using food stamps, because their cards are usually reloaded with cash value from the 10th through the 14th.

Jason Quincannon, acting store manager at Hannaford on Forest Avenue in Portland, said it was hard to turn shoppers away when their cards failed to work. The staff then had to return the groceries to the store shelves.

“These people are having to walk away and figure out another way to feed their kids,” said Quincannon.

Kiera Luke of Portland was helping a disabled friend buy groceries at the BJ’s on Warren Avenue in Portland when his card was rejected. His cart joined a long line of others filled with groceries and abandoned, Luke said.

“This was kind of a rude awakening,” said Luke.

OMG, a tragedy. THe thing is, I think that most (but by no means all) people who get foodstamps don’t rally need them—they are a freebie that lets them buy luxury food items.

My favorite incident was when I was behind a well-dressed woman, clearly Hispanic in a light-colored South American way (not Mexican looking), accompanied by her mother and well-behaved young sun. They had two shopping carts piled high with goodies. When the total was tallied, it exceeded what was available on her EBT card. So, she pulled out her American Express card to complete the purchase!

A few incidents of that and all sympathy evaporates.

And just so happens that today of all days all the freeloaders went to the stores to get their free Govt goodies..I guess now the users of these cards have something in common with the EBT cards, neither one works

I have a similar story..my Mom likes shopping at Whole Foods and Trader Joes..a while back I went with her to the local Whole Foods market in a nice part of town..saw a woman, she seemed pretty young, maybe mid 30s, purchasing a bunch of items with her EBT card, recognized the card right away, they advertize it here in LA constantly(And I thought it was strange, for someone to be using an EBT card in such an expensive store, even for the average person)we were behind her, so I got interested and noticed which car she went to after she went into the parking lot, a Mercedes Benz E class..we knew since my Mom was interested in getting the same model car, except 2014..gee I wonder how someone like that was able to get Food Stamps

Just like Maine Governor LePage has been saying “there’s no such thing as a free ride”

These people are so dumbed down, dependent and domesticated that they won’t make it in a grid down, SHTF scenario.

Have gainful employment and responsible family planning been ruled out then?

Back when they used “Paper” food stamps they didn’t have this problem. Now that they use a debit card “to preserve the client’s dignity” there seems to be all sorts of problems.

By the way, could you use paper food stamps in a stripclub?

I'll just say it: if you are reliant on government for EVERY meal and are not prepared for a single setback such as this, you are one hell of a shitty parent.

Maybe something drastic like work?

You know whats a shame..that these freeloaders who screw the system to get freebies from the Govt even though they are able bodies and can work..are ruining it for those who are truly helpless and really do need assistance..those are the ones I feel bad for.

Second paragraph at the news site.

"Shortly after 5 p.m. a spokeswoman for Xerox, which runs the benefits system, said it was running again,..."

The day will come soon, when all who receive incomes from big government will be getting their haircuts. The bond investors won't be the only ones taking losses.

Very true. I have no problem helping the truly needy, but I am convinced they are a minority. They have been overshadowed by the many, many stories of EBT use at strip clubs, users carrying their groceries to Escalades and the like. Liberals dismiss them as ‘anecdotal’ even when there are thousands of such ‘anecdotes’.

It could be righted, of course, with fraud prevention techniques. But liberals will not allow it (an attempt was squelched here in Massachusetts — big surprise).

Oh, the irony. I have to "figure out" how to feed my kids without using someone else's money every single day.

I know how those poor people feel.

Liberals dont care about helping those who truly need it..they only care about giving out free Govt goodies to anyone who takes it in exchange for votes..as long as libs keep on throwing out freebies after freebies to people, the libs own them..and own their vote..Govt freebies are like heroin, once you give them to people, they become addicted and freak out when you take them away
