Perkins: Cruz is de facto leader of Republican Party

Washington (CNN) -- As trench warfare over the government shutdown drags into its 11th day, a number of Republicans with visible roles in the stalemate, including Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, will take a breather from Capitol Hill on Friday to speak at the Values Voter Summit, one of the conservative movement's marquee annual events.

Pretty much everyone in official Washington has taken a beating in public opinion polls during the shutdown mess. Republicans, however, continue to shoulder most of the blame.

But don't expect to hear calls for GOP compromise from the hundreds of activists, elected officials and conservative celebrities at Friday's kickoff to this weekend's summit, said Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, the event's sponsor.

Cruz: I'm for health care reform, just not Obamacare

Instead, he said, expect this year's Values Voter Summit to be ground zero for the no-compromise wing of the Republican Party, and a hive of anti-Obamacare fervor where polarizing leaders like Cruz will be welcomed as conquering heroes.

. . .

Here is his interview, condensed and lightly edited.

Q: What message do you expect the congressional leaders speaking at the summit to have about the shutdown, and any potential deals to reopen the government or raise the debt ceiling?

Perkins: If you look at most of those we have coming to speak here, they're conservative leaders who have been pushing this effort to delay or suspend Obamacare. I don't think you are going to see them saying, 'Hey, we are going to settle here,' except for maybe Paul Ryan. I think they are going to use this as a platform to push for something of significance to come out of this showdown that has occurred between Republicans and the president.

This Perkins guy doesn't mince words, he knows Paul Ryan is weak on this. He didn't avoid saying that just to be nice.

He represents a fairly liberal constituency ....apparently that's his claim to fame!!!

So Romney picked a fellow liberal Republican as his running mate. Now I understand Ryan's unending attacks on Medicare and SS while ignoring welfare reform.

Ted Cruz is defacto head of the GOP?

Hell, yes, as far as I’m concerned, he is. He’s the only one - along with Mike Lee - who stood up and put himself under the gun.

Everyone else just followed when looked like “the right thing to do”... instead of stepping up and standing beside him.

You have to give Ted Cruz credit. He didn’t come to Washington to be John Cornyn. The freshman senator is making everyone take notice.

Mostly he was a stealth anti-gun bozo. After Columbine he went Bloomberg on us. I was one of many RMGO members who got elected as a delegate for the sole purpose of booing him off the stage at the state party convention. It was fun. He did not speak, he left.

That is what the libs been saying on MSNBC, that Cruz is runnuing the GOP. I see he was on CNN Crossfire yesterday.

Given that Obama has not backed off his public stand that he will not negotiate nor compromise on CR or debt ceiling isnt the GOP house giving him some positive PR with these media stories about negotiations at White House?

Well with Boehner and McConnell leading from under their desks somebody had to step up.

Wow, no "bias" in Pete Hamby's act, is there? Oh, wait -- CNN. Okay, I understand now.

To bad they don't have any viewers any more.

If Ted Cruz were the leader of the GOP I guarantee you they would not be caving like what Boner is setting up. Boner does not have the stomach to fight (I sense he abhors it), or the knowledge of a negotiator, and is not qualified to be Speaker.

It shocked me every bit as much as the clown's reelection to see Boner win a second nomination after all the grousing from some of the Conservatives like Bachmann and his dismal negotiating skills demonstrated during his first weepership gig..

Ryan didn't appear squishy to me until he got the VP nod. I'd kill to know which R strategist has Ryan's ear...and Rubio's. Big money R donors certainly have some hold too.
