Why Is This Not a National Tragedy? A troubled young mother is shot dead and our ruling class...
American Spectator ^ | 10.7.13 | ESTHER GOLDBERG

A troubled young mother is shot dead and our ruling class applauds.

An unarmed 34-year-old woman suffering from postpartum depression is surrounded by the authorities while sitting in her car, and gunned down in cold blood. She is blocked in. She cannot move. And yet she is killed by heavily armed security officers. Her one-year old child witnesses this from the back seat. Why is this not a national tragedy?

Miriam Carey was a young African-American woman who wanted to better herself. She went to college and graduated with a BA degree in health and nutrition science. She became a dental hygienist. One of her neighbors noted that it was obvious she was educated. She gave birth to her daughter a year ago and began to suffer from postpartum depression. She displayed some irrational behavior and was put on medication.

Thus far it’s not an uncommon story. About 50% of women who give birth suffer from postpartum depression. A friend of mine was on medication for more than 8 years after her daughter was born. This might conceivably happen to my daughter. Or to one of Obama’s daughters, come to think of it.

Then, on October 3, Miriam crashed her car into a security barrier near the White House. She was surrounded by security men shouting at her and pointing high-power guns. Was it so irrational to try to escape, to protect her daughter from men pointing pistols at her? A chase ensued, and she then crashed her car into a median somewhere in the vicinity of the Congress. She was blocked by security forces from several agencies. She could not move. She was unarmed, and alone save for her daughter. In her car, unprotected. And then she was killed...

Still posting the vehicle code from Washington state, I see.

Go look up the code on Vehicular Assault and Third-degree assault, and at least the people living in Washington state will know the applicable laws.

You might also want to stop slandering the people that think the police acted lawfully. That's a lot different from what they should have done, or could have done. But, if you don't like the law, change it.

The “troubled young mother” who attempted to attack the White House and the Capitol, possibly harming her own little child in the back seat, is now getting the “path to sainthood” treatment. If anyone else had done this, their remains would now be mulching the White House lawn. There wouldn’t have been enough left to bother with.

And, BTW, exactly WHAT would a troublemaker have to do NOT to be excused because she was having a bad day?

I’m not fond of our President, but he should be safe from crazies.

They extracted the baby and THEN killed her.

This was more or less an execution —probably a little less than an execution.

BUT CLOSE.

But since our Prez is black and progressive, the leftist MSM makes it go away.

When the FBI came to cart away ALL of the Japanese-Americans it was done not by some run-of-the-mill leftist but instead by the very Grandfather of Liberalism, FDR.

There is a lesson there, and I think that people with badges and uniforms are FARRRRR less likely to question their orders —we have imported many many people born in places where their rulers are their overlords, and mostly they retain that view.

There were FIVE badged officers riding with the NYC motorcycle gang, and they stood and watched.

People shoot off their mouths about “rifle behind every blade of grass” and “the soldiers will turn on their officers, discarding their orders”.

I very strongly disbelieve that.

Yes, of course, to stop, surround, and execute is expeditious and a real strategic performance.

Which is exactly what they tried to do:

If it was all just a misunderstanding, don't you think she should have stopped at that point?

“After the ramming, they’re thinking suicide bomber...”

Yeah, that was my thought too. How many private security guards are vets? In Iraq, if a car rammed a security barricade, the next thing you would expect would be a big boom. That’s what some posters here who say she was no threat once the car was stopped are probably forgetting.

“An unarmed 34-year-old woman suffering...”

Armed with the 3000 lb car she was driving. They didn’t have a choice but to shoot her when she refused to stop or give up.

They extracted the baby and THEN killed her.

I keep hearing this, and traced it back to a single witness. Is there any corroboration?

I find it interesting that every other account that isn't on video is questioned, but everyone is willing to accept her account.

her car was stopped, hence no threat. If the cops were able to get the kid out of the car, they could have used other means to subdue her.
That being said, I,like a lot of other people are armchair quarterbacking this from our computers. Maybe there was another threat, either real or perceived, that is unknown to us.
Time will tell....hopefully

Everyone is important. Their job is to protect and that's what they did.

No, their job is "officer safety" and going home at the end of their shift. (Pssst....we're not buying the "protect and serve" bullshit anymore)

So, pray tell, how did the people doing the shooting know this wasn't a new twist on an old car bomb idea?

There have been female jihadis wearing bomb vests.

I'm not excusing shooting an unarmed woman with the kid in the car, but the unarmed part isn't really ascertained until after the dust settles.

We complain about armchair generals second guessing security personnel overseas, and then put on the stars ourselves.

If the cops were able to grab the baby out of the car why couldn’t they tazed her or pulled the keys or flattened the tires?

<><><><

The woman was dead by the time the cops pulled the baby out. Tazing her at that point was pretty unnecessary.

Wonder if they’ll do a DNA analysis of the child?

For what reason?

was using information from a eyewitness that said the shooting started after the kid was removed.

When a family member is over 18 there is not much you can do, until they do something illegal.

<><><><

We committed my mother 5 times in 15 years. I can assure you she was over 18.

It’s hard, damn hard, but if you care enough, you do it.

At the end she was blocked in, no where to go. It would be important to know what was said and done at that point. How much time was there, was she warned, was she asked to exit the car, was she combative and did she attempt to cooperate? An eyewitness said she saw the baby taken out of the car and then immediate gunfire, that is troublesome to me, because that sounds like the plan was to extract the baby and kill her.

I couldn’t discern an exact sequence of events from the video, and I imagine that dealing with a grossly irrational, possibly armed, driver is an chilling and unpredictable experience. Remember, this woman didn’t give a flip for the little soul in the back seat or any other human beings who happened to get in her way. This is one of those sad cases where we probably needed to shoot first and analyze later.

“Guess what? Nowhere is the penalty death by multiple rounds of gunfire.”

Nice try, but it has nothing to do with a “penalty”, or what crime you think she would have been accused of. If she put people’s lives in danger, they had every right to use lethal force to defend themselves, and others, from her.

Either we are for self defense for everyone, including cops, or we aren’t. If we decide to ignore that right just because we want to rant against the government now, then we’ll be a laughingstock when we try to invoke that right the next time a Zimmerman comes along.

Have you noticed that everyone of these incident in the last five years is just a little off. Boston it takes five minutes for the blood to flow. Sandy Hook a second or third shooter never found. Aurora second shooter (handler) lost control of the mark. Navy yard no follow up news or any real backup information on the shooter. D.C. car shooting or murder with a women that is unarmed with a car with no damage. Do you see there is always drugs and mental problems. And I don’t even want to start on the U.S. Gov. B.S. around the world. Please folks wakeup and smell the B.S. before you step in it.
