Obama Doesn't Rule Out Using 14th Amendment To Raise The Debt Limit

With the October 17 deadline to raise the debt limit rapidly approaching, President Obama is not specifically ruling out using the 14th Amendment to increase the nation's borrowing ability if the political impasse continues and Congress fails to do so, but says he does not expect the fight to get to that point.

"I'm pretty willing to bet that there are enough votes in the House of Representatives right now to make sure that the United States doesn't end up being a deadbeat. The only thing that's preventing that from happening is Speaker Boehner calling the vote," the president told The Associated Press in an interview Friday that was released this morning.

Wikipedia:The Fourteenth Amendment (Amendment XIV) to the United States Constitution was adopted on July 9, 1868, as one of the Reconstruction Amendments. The amendment addresses citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws, and was proposed in response to issues related to former slaves following the American Civil War. The amendment was bitterly contested, particularly by Southern states, which were forced to ratify it in order for them to regain representation in the Congress.

Interesting how the Republicans namely Boehner specifically ruled out governmental default as means in which to prevent runaway debt. Yet, Obama made no such pledge in which to resolve the impasse in a more equitable manner without resorting to raising the ceiling.The President is confident that there are enough votes to raise the debt ceiling, as he says, to make sure the United States doesn't end of being a deadbeat. Too bad we don't have any similar approach that assures the country of the same consideration regarding the President, as eternal deadbat

It's bitterly ironic how the President intends to use the 14th Amendment to serve his own political benefit and essentially to the utter detriment of the United States of America. The 14th Amendment was proposed in response to issues related to former slaves following the American Civil War. In the next few days, he expects to use that very same Constitutional Amendment originally written to help the freed slaves to diametric polar opposite effect by using it to have us all enslaved, indentured in eternal servitude to the government for all time to come.

Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution - Rights Guaranteed Privileges and Immunities of Citizenship, Due Process and Equal Protection

AMENDMENT XIV of the UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION

Passed by Congress June 13, 1866. Ratified July 9, 1868.

Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

Section 2. Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State, excluding Indians not taxed. But when the right to vote at any election for the choice of electors for President and Vice President of the United States, Representatives in Congress, the Executive and Judicial officers of a State, or the members of the Legislature thereof, is denied to any of the male inhabitants of such State, being twenty-one years of age, and citizens of the United States, or in any way abridged, except for participation in rebellion, or other crime, the basis of representation therein shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male citizens shall bear to the whole number of male citizens twenty-one years of age in such State.

How does he twist this into giving himself the power to raise the debt ceiling? Is he going to declare the Republicans in a state of rebellion?

If the debt ceiling is not raised, there is still money to pay the interest on the debt. It’s a false argument to begin with. The president would simply have to make that a priority...which he wouldn’t do because he hates this country. Still, the guys is psycho because as the president he’s trying to talk the markets down. What sane leader talks like this. He’s always acting like he’s outside a circle he’s in the middle of. If the economy crashes, it’s Obamas fault...nobody else’s. he’s the freakin president.

Anyway, this president is psycho which makes him dangerous and us vulnerable. I think the GOP should unconditionally raise the debt ceiling for two week periods until they get some concessions on Obamacare. On one hand, Obama gets an unconditional debt ceiling increase, but he only gets it for two weeks. We could play this game for the next three years if that’s how he wants it... Until we get some concession on Obamacare...if we don’t the concession he doesn’t get smooth financial sailing for the rest of his term. We have to fight...with creative ideas like these because like I said, thisPresident is nuts.

The only way the US could ‘default’ on its debt is if Obama ordered it so. But in doing so, he would be in violation of the 14th amendment. The House should have impeachment drawn up just in case he tries. Yes, it is that serious.
We do not ‘run out of money’ on Oct 17. Revenue will continue to flow at the rate of $250B/mo. The $30B/mo debt will be serviced from that amount.

The President cannot authorize borrowing, because he has no authority to make law, and so no ability to authorize it by law.

In making this post, I wanted to familiarize myself with the 14th Amendment to understand the dynamics in which it provided the President with the means to raise the debt ceiling but perusing quickly through the amendment I was unable to find anything related to the power of the President regarding debt ceiling.
