Sisters question fatal shooting in DC police chase
Associated Press ^ | October 5, 2013 | LARRY NEUMEISTER

EW YORK (AP) — The sisters of a woman who was fatally shot in Washington after trying to ram her car through a White House barrier say she was not a criminal and police should not have shot her.

"We're still very confused as a family why she's not still alive," Amy Carey-Jones said late Friday, speaking of her 34-year-old sister, Miriam Carey. "I really feel like it's not justified, not justified."

Another sister, retired New York City police officer Valarie Carey, said there was "no need for a gun to be used when there was no gunfire coming from the vehicle."

The sisters spoke outside Valarie Carey's home in Brooklyn Friday night after traveling to Washington to identify Miriam Carey's body.

Washington's Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement Friday that its Internal Affairs Division is investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting. The Secret Service, Capitol Police and FBI are assisting, the department said.

Secret Service agents and Capitol Police officers both fired shots during the encounter with Carey. Witnesses said Carey hit a Secret Service agent with her car at the White House. A Capitol Police officer was also injured. Both are expected to recover.

i agree. i think it’s pretty clear why she is no longer alive.

what IS in question is what the backstory behind her bizarre behavior is.

There are varying stories out there.

It seems to me that the most likely is that she drove up to the barrier and was told to turn around and get out of there. She hit it in the awkward process of turning around.

If a cop got hit by a car, how do we know it was her car that did it? Several police seem to have managed to crash their cars without her assistance.

Law enforcement from different branches were all running around like crazy, waving their assault rifles and apparently shooting this woman, who was unarmed.

It sounds to me as if they responded in all the wrong ways to this crisis, and went completely berserk. It’s extremely lucky that they didn’t kill any of the innocent bystanders who were running around and ducking for cover.

If she was threatening to hurt or kill a cop with her car, maybe it would be justified. But I really doubt that’s what happened.

she had already injured armed persons and was using the car as a deadly weapon. not listening to verbals.

i don’t have a problem with the reaction, all specifics in this particular case, considered.

Oddly enough, we had the issue of the cardboard cutouts of ordinary Americans being supposedly bought by DHS or something this year. Not implying a connection beyond the Feds wanting to be able to shoot kids and pregnant women etc at will (assuming the reports are true).

great point about the family. if the family knows she’s unstable and is having daycare issues, couldn’t any of them step up for her? i thought black family keeps telling all of us they’re tight and have each others’ backs?

1. Was she a danger? Yes
2. Was this handled properly? No
3. Could less than deadly force have been used? Yes
4. Why not? Lack of training. Robocop mentality on part of many cops today. Too many different enforcement agencies involved. Car was not going anywhere. If it was suspected of being wired would you walk up to it? Mistaken idea that you need to quickly “resolve” any conflict.
5. The Capital officer injured by deployment of car barricade by SS. This happens often in this type of situation. Your mates are more dangerous than the perp. in some instances. Think friendly fire. I have seen cops go down when one of them decided to shoot into a solid steel door. Not smart.
6. Shooting is the last resort not the first. Watching too many TV cop shows.
I was a state trooper and former agent about 30 years ago.
We prided ourselves on using that least used sense, common sense.

Na, shooting out tires is only in the movies. But stop strips are used by all the other police departments. Real cops now are trained to stop automobiles with their cars even if they have to wreck them.
But you gotta admit, this one sure got a lot of attention for the non furloughed, furloughed Capital POlice.
Funny thing though, no one that I have heard has played the dreaded race card.

Then you are wrong, she was at the US Capital, not the White and she had exited her car and was fleeing UNARMED when she was fired upon by UNION POLICE THUGS, they fired over 30 rounds at this UNARMED woman.

Keep in mind that HITLER had the help of union police thugs to take control on Germany.

How does an armed cop justify shooting someone running away, especially when he person has no known weapon on them?

If all it takes to justifiably kill someone is that they flee a car when you show your gun, I think we will see a lot more of this.

The police car that was totalled appears to have simply been his own bad driving. However, it has been spun as being “heroic.” After all, he did it to protect 0bama.

An (unknown to authorities) mentally unstable woman may or may not have gotten lost, injured some armed presidential security folks, dorve around the city causing chaos, shutting down the Capitol, was not obeying any commands and was shot.

Being nutterbutters can’t be an excuse to be able to do what she did. If people knew of her problems then maybe somebody who knew her probelms should have maybe taken steps to protect her from herself, like maybe say she shouldn’t be driving, shouldn’t be alone, and maybe help her with her daycare issues and other day to day problems.

You can’t lay any of that on the security people.

Sad situation all around. No way the police can be blamed. When they say stop, it is best to STOP.

you know, most people don’t even think about this but I believe it’s true.

tv is INUNDATED with cop shows of all kinds.

They are shooting at people ALL THE TIME. Multiple times a show, weapons are drawn and gunfights occur.

The tactics used by the cops on these shows are theatrics and not legal in many cases, even the dialogs say so in certain stories.

We are swamped - and I believe - being programmed - to accept this sort of behavior and more importantly, SO ARE THE REAL COPS who watch this crap and think they can operate this way, like the tv cops.

It is brainwashing. NCIS and all, CSI and all, The Closer, Rookie Blue, Blue Bloods, NYPD whatever, Flashpoint, Criminal Minds, Numbers, The Shield, etc - some are not new but still in syndication - all this stuff.

It definitely was an execution. This is what is coming to our country when only they have guns. She had no weapon.

Cops shouldn’t do soldiers work, and soldiers shouldn’t do police work.

Let’s not get started on the effed up rules of engagement in chithole countries we shouldn’t be in the first place.

We had a local case where a man who was a drunk well known to police and had never been violent was raising hell with a neighbor. When police arrived the perp killed the first cop through the door with the only round he had and the second cop killed the perp. The usual suspects started screeching about the second cop killing an unarmed man.

I can also remember a case where I don’t believe the shooting was justified. 3 cops shot a guy from 10 or 15 yards away as he ran from them with a box cutter in hand.

And then there are the cases when a shooting is justified but police show restraint. Just last winter a guy a few miles from here chased 2 cops around his yard with a chainsaw. They managed to get the cruiser between themselves and the perp and managed to talk him down and arrested him peacefully.

Every single case is different.
