Witnesses say there was another man filming the incident. Some witnesses heard the guy who set himself on fire saying something before he did it (probably for the camera), but they didn't hear what he said.

National Mall not actually a mall in the ordinary sense of the word (though maybe "on" could have been a tip-off).
The man died Friday night at a Washington hospital where he had been airlifted, Officer Araz Alali, a police spokesman, said.
Suspended by New Rochelle Police Department, sued city for racism, then moved down (or up) to DC.

I’m not trying to be unkind; but I was wondering if the people who rushed over to try to put out his flames did him any favors. There is hardly any pain worse than severe burns.
I knew a lady who was close friends with a man who was depressed and set himself on fire to kill himself. He knew he wasn't likely going to make it. He confessed his sins, including suicide (a rarity), and prepared for death in the day or so he had left.
One important note" he was burned badly enough taht he didn't feel pain anymore. I suppose the burning can damage the nerves enough so that you no longer feel pain.
