You’d think they would have learned by now that the “squishy middle” doesn’t win elections. Either you stand for one set of values or the other.

That’s all these people think about. Does it hurt the GOP....

Obamacare hurts this nation, it is bad law. It must go.

What the heck REAL solution do these ‘elders’ have? Letting it go to fall under its own weight ISN’T a plan or a solution.

It is gambling and even if it does fall, the odds of getting rid of it are poor.

Why needlessly antagonize people? We need all Republican senators and representatives to stand firm. Sure. There are a few, like Senator McCain, who are openly aiding and abetting our political enemies, but many others are reasonably on our side.

Anyone who has ever had to work with teams of people should understand this. You can be 100% right and still lose. We can’t go into this sounding like a bunch of anarchists who are completely indifferent to the shutdown and its impact.

It bothers me that someone like Senator Ayotte has flip flopped so radically since her election. She was a “Tea Party” pick. Now she’s for amnesty and has apparently gone squishy on funding Obamacare. Some would probably want to write her off, but I wonder how she could have changed so quickly. She must have been either a stealth moderate to start with, or she was open to moderate influence.

My point? It doesn’t matter if Senator Cruz and the other conservatives are fighting for the right things. They have to convince and encourage others to join them. Otherwise, Speaker Boehner will fold with Democrat and RINO votes, and Harry Reid will have 60 votes to overcome even a filibuster.

It’s bad enough that the media is out to get us. We can’t afford to give them ANY ammo. Conservatives are for responsible, smaller government. We’re the ones who want to pay the bills, honor existing promises, and save the government from default.

You can also try to send this to Eric Cantor, the House Majority Leader, and cc your own representative and senators. I managed to actually talk to someone in Cantor’s office last week. Your message is a good one.

What is ‘fighting WITH the president’?

Which president are we talking about?

None. That’s why the party is a complete mess. No solutions, no direction, and no principles.

They are not ‘elders’, they are losers.

Besides, (don't know much about Dan Coats) "Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire" can hardly be called GOP Elders. Senile maybe, but not party elders.

“GOP elders” don't have the stomach to fight. They play both ends against the middle hoping to appear concerned and conservative but never willing to risk their cushy little fiefdoms with all it's perks and privileges.

They LOVE being Mr(s) Senator and Mr(s) Congressperson.

They Love their vacations their salaries their INSDER TRADING, Their OBAMACARE SUBSIDIES, Their RETIREMENT BENEFITS.

They LOVE it ALL. And they HATE anyone who rocks the boat (Thank You Ted).

EBH: “Keep trying to fund the portions of the government...”

Agreed. It may well be that President Obama wants a default regardless of what the Republicans do. Nevertheless, raising the debt limit is probably the right thing to do. That doesn’t have to include giving in to Democrat demands for a “clean” CR. Republicans need to prove we’re not trying to tear it all down overnight. As you wrote, they can continue to pass bills that fund essential portions of the government.

I’m impatient for a return to constitutional governance, but it took nearly a century to build this federal behemoth. We can’t just walk in and act like we want to destroy it overnight. This beast is going to take time to unravel, and we need political majorities to do that. We’ve got to be the party of responsible government!

A most excellent post. And true to every word.

The denizens of DC quickly contract what’s often referred to as “Potomac Fever”. Once they get there, they never want to leave or do anything else. Life is good in DC.

The thought of having to return back home to the hinterlands from whence they came, and living the rest of their life doing normal work in annonymity, is the most frightening thing to them. They love DC and yes, HATE anyone who rocks the boat.

Ms. Ayotte was especially furious, according to two people present, and waved a printout from a conservative group friendly to Mr. Cruz attacking 25 of his fellow Republican senators for supporting a procedural vote that the group counted as support of the health law.

Wah!!! And to think that Ayotte, like Cruz, owes her job to Sarah Palin. By far she has been the biggest disappointment of all of Palin's endorsements.

The onslaught to pressure Republicans is relentless. Probably NOT phone calls but the media all over blah blah blah how bad this is, polls saying people hate congress.

It was planned. Monday morning our local Farm Services Agency employees went to work and had an email saying to go apply for unemployment and go home. When does the government EVER have a clear plan for anything that quickly? The clear reason is to have visible effect in local communities as to how bad things are.

raising the debt limit is probably the right thing to do

*********
I don’t mean to sound contrary, but we are already closing in on a nominal $17 trillion debt. And that does not count the unfunded liabilities of $126 trillion. (Your share of that liability as a taxpayer is over $1 million.) And now we’re going to increase the debt again, probably close to another trillion.

Is raising the debt limit the right thing to do when we have to borrow more money to make the interest payments? When does this dangerous insanity stop?

The truth is nobody wants to deal with the debt becuase its a painful problem. Kick the can down the road and let it explode on someone else’s watch.

We have taxed, borrowed, and printed money to fund the federal behemoth and are reaching the limits of all three. We are facing a catastrophic implosion if we don’t get the debt under control soon.
