Shutdown Day 3: Food distributor stalled, charter boat captains docked
Miami Herald ^ | October 3, 2013 | CHARLES RABIN

"......Feeding South Florida is just one of 202 food banks in the country hit hard by the Washington, D.C., stalemate. With 47 employees, it’s the largest of nine in Florida, responsible for 30 percent of statewide distribution.

The agency distributes 35 million pounds of food a year from its 70,000-square-foot warehouse, everything from bananas and pears, to turkeys and hams, to soups and nuts, even baby formula. The USDA funding accounts for more than one-third of Feeding South Florida’s supply chain. On Thursday, its six open loading bays were filled with volunteers heaving food into U-Hauls and other trucks.

The distribution center’s 325 partner agencies supply food to 949,910 people.

“They sent us an email saying we can’t order anything else. So once we distribute this, that’s it,” says Sari Vatske, the distributor’s vice president of programs and initiatives. “We need Publix, Target, Walmart and Winn-Dixie to step up. We’ll need to double efforts on food drives and fundraisers.”

The sting of the shutdown was a little harsher to those doing business with the federal government on Day 3 of the standoff: Food distributors’ shelves were emptying, small business loans were in a holding pattern, and Florida Bay’s waters became off-limits to some............."

Maybe next time, the food bank ought to try partnering with the local Catholic Church. Or Presbyterian Church. Or a coalition of churches. Or anybody not affiliated with Fedzilla.

BUMP!

.......I’d love to see that sort of civic education get national traction—though I know it’s highly unlikely.

Ditto to your post. And I would add that people start thinking more about the 10th Amendment and supporting strong conservative governors and state legislatures.

“Insensitive’ Me would ask (foolishly) if the people receiving this food (ABSOLUTELY no problem IF qualified etc) are also receiving EBT(?) cards and/or food stamps.

Kind of like one ‘arm’ of Govt giving subsidized housing AND another sending a check to help pay the rent.

Were someone to HONESTLY take some accounts and show what these ‘leeches’ are actually drawing - Of course if they do that NO ONE would ever work again, all would be getting on the gravy train.

BUT no one has ever sat them down and told them what happens were EVERYONE to go on ‘strike’.

Of course our great Press strikes again yesterday - for the 12 years or so that BO has been at the ‘public trough’ virtually NO background info shows up.

8 hours after that lady ‘caused problems’ in DC (almost sounds like original ‘problem’ was caused by her making a ‘wrong turn’?? and then panicking when groups of armed men- in uniform and not- began chasing her) they knew what brand of ????? she uses, her life was an open book AND the Police had not ‘officially’ ID’d her.

Charter guides received a message from the National Park Service this week informing them that they are not permitted to take clients fishing in Florida Bay until the feds get back to work. That means that more than 1,100 square miles of prime fishing is off limits between the southern tip of the mainland to the Keys until further notice.

Why does a shutdown in funding for non-essential parts of the government warrant this?

It's nothing but a punitive action to score a political jab.

This shut down is pealing back and revealing layers upon layers of federal government, the size and scope of their "help" and "control."

Each one of theses tragic stories provides the opportunity to solve the problem and cut federal spending. 1.) Food subsidy problem: get off your lazy asses and feed yourself or go to a private charity. 2.) Federal parks/lands: give land/water back to the states (less military facilities). States can choose whether to sell to the public, homestead, or run them. The 10a was written for a reason.

Harriette Wilson-Greene stood on the ramp of an enormous warehouse filled with food Thursday, overseeing Rafik Tillman as he tossed box after heavy box filled with turkey, chicken and ham into the back of an overloaded Chevy Tahoe.

The food, as it has been for the past five years, was headed to the Omega Power and Place Ministry in Liberty City, where 160 needy families each week depend on it.

So, now we discover that, besides welfare and food stamps, the feds give free turkey, chicken, and ham to organizations like "Omega Power and Place", to feed the "needy". Why do I suspect this is yet another "community organizing" group which will give you free food as long as you help with the Dem agenda?

Now we understand how food stamp recipients can afford lobster and steak -- they get their basics from these food banks!

Shut the whole thing down.

Now what would happen if food supplies were sequestered, blockaded, or otherwise shut down to a million people?

Perhaps they would then have to use their food stamps to buy basic food instead of steak, lobster, and beer?

Indeed, though sometimes I think the education needs to begin with the GOP House and GOP guvs, respectively—if nobody challenges it, it’s not Constitutionally protected.

This is a winner for us. Fund these operations in a CR today. Let the House continue to react to the plight of these people and let Obama and the Dem-run Senate reject that. Repeat.

Eventually, the MSM’s lies, photo-shopped images of “misery and suffering”, and their manipulation of public opinion will dissolve in the reality that one branch of government is doing the people’s business.

It’s the perfect time for the TEA Party to be reasonable. We don’t want kids or the poor to go hungry. The current method of helping those in financial distress is fly paper. It traps them. We can do better, but in the meantime the flawed system is what we have.

If we get a Senate majority, we’ll fix this folks, but for now - mercy.

Keep in mind that the constituency of the Democrats is government and all its myriad tentacles. How long can they ignore the pain and suffering of their constituency? A week?

It’s why they’re screaming so loudly. They hold two-thirds of the active federal government and can’t win without the people’s House. Let the house keep passing CR after CR. I’d lump in the cumulative funding bills to date. At some point the Dems will bite. They have to.

Omega Power and Place Ministry

I went looking for mentions of it. It's Omega Power And Praise Ministries Inc, 1852 NW 47TH TER MIAMI, FL 33142-4050.

Looking at google maps street view, it appears to be a regular private residence with no "church" sign.

Any bets on whether this "minister" really has a congregation the size he says he has, and that the food actually goes to the "needy", versus the "minister"s family and friends?

Folks, how many places around the globe have wee seen society collapse due to food riots?

How many times have governments interfered with the food distribution network, and what were the results?

That is EXACTLY what I was getting at in post 14:

It also sounds like this shutdown is creating a blockade to prevent food getting to a million “poor” people in Florida.

Now what would happen if food supplies were sequestered, blockaded, or otherwise shut down to a million people?

This has serious consequences — intended or unintended?

“Are we all gonna die?”
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Well I don’t want to say we are all gonna die BUT...the oldest of my uncles was a deputy sheriff, he was born in 1899. Reliable research seems to indicate that there is probably not a single individual who was born the same year as my uncle who is still living anywhere on the Earth. Just saying. Oh, wait, did you mean die really soon? Your guess is as good as mine.

State Governments run by conservatives need to step up and shut down the Federal Government actions within their borders.

Wisconsin isnt even a mostly conservative state and it told the fedgov to F off, when they told Wisconsin to close their parks.

The states have the manpower and coordination to defy this out of control tyranny. The States have the power, but do they have the will to do so? I guess we will find out who needs to be replaced in state governments as well...

“The other sliver of a hope I’d have would be if the country could be led to a new appreciation of our Constitution’s purposely giving the power of the purse to the House so as to make spending by the government that isn’t supported by the people possible.”
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

That would be wonderful if it happened but I honestly believe that only a tiny and ever dwindling minority is able to even comprehend HOW the government is supposed to function, let alone WHY is was designed that way. Those who have been taught anything about all that are rapidly aging and dying. The younger people seem to have no understanding of what it is all about, they may think they know but most of what they know is wrong. I am a public high school graduate, it is frightening for me to speak to a young college graduate and realize that he knows far less about history and civics than I did when I was twelve.

Americans have tried to be ignorant and free and just as Jefferson said it has never been and never will be.
