IRS workers in Ogden protest government shutdown

OGDEN, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) – A passionate protest was held in front of the James V. Hansen Federal Building was held Thursday by federal employees wanting to return to their jobs.

“We want to work!” the group chanted.

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers are living in limbo during the government shutdown. Roughly 10,000 of those people are employed in Utah, but are being furloughed.

Jenny Brown is a furloughed IRS worker in Ogden. Brown said she and about 90 percent of IRS workers in Ogden are staying at home without pay. They were protesting on behalf of the NTEU or National Treasury Employees Union.

“It’s been some rough days,” Brown said. “We’re all worried. We don’t know what’s going to happen or when we’re going back to work.”

The group is also wondering when they will see their next paycheck.

“We’re hurting,” Brown said. “We’re struggling to make ends meet and pay the necessities.”

Monty Lewis and a group from the American Federation of Government Employees showed up to the protest in solidarity. Lewis works at Hill Air Force Base where he said about 2,700 employees are furloughed too.

Lewis is still going to work, but will not get paid until the shutdown is over.

“You’re at work knowing you’re not getting paid,” Lewis said. “It’s kind of hard to concentrate on your job.”

Lewis said he feels like a pawn in a game of chess and Congress is playing.

“We don’t know how long [the shutdown] will last,” Lewis added. “The uncertainty is bad on morale.”

He hopes Congress can settle their differences so Utahns can get back to work for the federal government.

Do you know what they do in Utah?

Consider yourself on the rotation if it is to difficult to figure it out.

so they got paid last Friday but it looks like they won’t get paid in next Friday so whatever they got last paycheck or had saved will have to cover the bills coming up

yeah, that causes struggles and sleepless nights
anyone who ever lost their income suddenly and hope for but not plan for the future will understand

remember obama and reid are skewering the civil service workers for maximum pain. If this doesnt work they will figure out how to extend the pain. maybe to you or yours

those on furlough are on unpaid furlough and it will take an act of Congress (not just pass the CR) to get them paid

this has happened in the past when the govt shutdown but it is not guaranteed to happen, so uncertainty

“If” and “when” doesn’t pay the rent

people are nervous because the sequester furloughs that occurred this summer were unpaid leave

those in the minority (excepted positions now working but not being paid) will get paid when the CR is passed

the struggle comes from not being able to plan ahead
how to pay the bills due at end of month

can’t expect a paycheck next Friday so have to make do with what you got last time or have saved, to pay the rent

many Americans would have a problem planning for sudden loss of income regardless of the source or cause or duration

lets see what happens when the SS checks stop

Yes people are supposed to have savings to carry them if they lose their job but in reality many have little, especially the younger

“We’re struggling to make ends meet and pay the necessities.”

Don't forget to pay your taxes! Oh, and your Husseincare premium.

““We want to work!” the group chanted.”

So do millions of other workers who obama has given his middle finger to. At least these mostly voted for the jerk.

My Brother works for the IRS...and I mean works. He deals with Urban types who don’t even know their own SSN and yet knows all about the Earned Income tax credit.
I wouldn’t take his job for anything. And he really hates the IRS but is close to his pension he don’t want to quit just yet.

The group is also wondering when they will see their next paycheck.

They don't want to work, they just want their next paycheck. Hogs sucking the teat of the tax payer.

Dear Ogden IRS “employee’s”,
Sit down and shut up, you work for us and we are tired of you; stew in it for a while.

A good welcome to the world the common folk live in. They can get in the unemployment line. I expect this agency is like any other Fed one, loaded with non-working hacks that got their jobs via Affirmative Action and don’t have to work due to Union rules that prevent their firing. There’s no agency whose employees should suffer more than the IRS.

I hope I can find a similar feel good EPA story next.

The "government" (the departments of the executive branch) is a multi-TRILLION dollar boondoggle.

It's nothing but a massive jobs program...for democRATs.
