‘A trickle, not a wave:’ What insurers are seeing in Obamacare enrollment

Health insurers and individuals began reporting a trickle of enrollments in the new online marketplaces created by the health-care law, as federal and state officials scrambled to try to fix technical problems that have prevented many consumers from buying coverage.

After two days without any word on sign-ups, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana received some reassuring news Wednesday night: Seven people had signed up for its plan on the marketplace that day.

“The first day and second we received no submissions,” spokesman John Maginnis said. “This being day three, we were notified through the healthcare.gov website that we had seven. So that’s very good news. It’s a small number, but it told us the functionality is beginning to perform as its supposed to.”

Other insurers reported similar results Thursday. Many hesitated to offer specifics, however, because they had yet to verify the information they were receiving from the federal government.

Reassuring news? Reassuring to whom, and why? Nothing like a little editorializing in a news story.

Seven people have signed up. How many Americans are there? Something like 313,000,000. Let me do the math. . . .

And, BTW, Amazon gets something like a billion hits a day, and the Obamacare website can't handle a million? Let me do the math. . . .

Don't worry. There are plans in place to ensure compliance.

People keep saying that but I don't know what it means. The FedGov is sovereign and can keep on staggering along indefinitely, no matter how inefficiently. Brute financial unaccountability, with no requirement of productivity, what's to collapse?

Private enterprises ALWAYS do better than large government programs. Haven’t we learned this YET?

My daughter and her husband have 6 kids, 3 still at home and have never had insurance!
They have always paid thier dr and hospital as they could.
Now they are told that they MUST pay $500/mo for Obamacare.
She says they’ll just have to go to jail along with the rest of the middle class because they can’t feed the kids and pay that much. They don’t spend $125/week for groceries! They built their own home, hunt, raise a pig and a beef and have a huge garden and get by very well.
That’s the kind of self-sufficiency Obama wants to destroy.

And I’ll bet the 7 that signed up have diabetes or some other problem. I’ll bet they are not the youngsters the plan requires.

...they had yet to verify the information they were receiving from the federal government.

In other words, they suspect the federal government of lying to them.

Wow, that’s terrible. Maybe they can get insurance cheaper through a regular broker and not use the marketplace plans.

I guess their income was too high for them to qualify for those premium tax credits the government is giving. Too bad they can’t just continue on as they were, paying when the need arose.

At this rate quite a few people are going to die from old age before they can even sign up for healthcare.

“Apple announced today that their new 7eieio device, which is to be leased for $20 per day rather than owned, finally has its first customers after a week on the market. Supposedly four Hollywood celebrities have become the proud “owners” of the new device.

Some have criticized Apple for not even publishing a picture or telling us what it actually does. Company officials have just said people are going to have to sign up for a 1-year lease to learn more about it. They are encouraged by the initial flood of customers.”
