US shutdown closes Cambridgeshire (UK) cemetery

An iconic Cambridgeshire cem­e­tery has been closed to members of the public as a result of the US government's shutdown.

Around 3,800 US military personnel are buried at the American Cemetery at Madingley, and the site attracts thousands of visitors every year.

However, tourists are now being turned away after funding was cut amid the on-going dispute between President Obama and the Republicans in Washington.

The cemetery has subsequently been closed until further notice.

Allied military cemeteries are conventionally treated as sovereign territory of the country served by the deceased servicemen. There is a British cemetery on the outer banks of North Carolina.

Which begs the question why are we wasting these tax dollars? Fine, pay to have it mown and the restrooms cleaned. I'm sure the janitor can keep the bulletin board up to date and the brochure box filled. But that's all that's needed. Same with the Grand Canyon. It's not like it was boxed up and stored away until the government opens back up. Just like NASA didn't turn back Voyager or shut it down. This shut might just wake up some people with just a tiny crack into government waste.
