Iowa senator quits after report on Bachmann money

An Iowa state senator resigned Wednesday after a special investigator found it likely he violated ethics rules by taking money from political entities connected to former presidential candidate Michele Bachmann and then denying he’d done so.

Sen. Kent Sorenson told The Associated Press that he had already decided he would not run for re-election, and that his resignation was best for his family. He said his decision was “absolutely not” an admission of wrongdoing. …

His resignation came after attorney Mark Weinhardt said in a report released earlier in the day that it was “manifestly clear” Sorenson negotiated payments in 2011 that eventually reached $7,500 monthly in exchange for his work as Bachmann’s Iowa campaign chair. The money flowed from Bachmann’s political action committee, MichelePAC, and her presidential campaign to a Colorado consulting firm, which in turn paid Sorenson’s Iowa-based firm, Weinhardt wrote in the report filed with the Iowa Senate. …

They wrote the entire article without mentioning which
political party.

Isn’t that SOP when a democrat is the subject?

Part of the GOP circus in Iowa, with Ron Paul backers having taken over many party chairs but undermining GOP candidates.
Sorensen, an early Bachmann backer, is alleged to have taken money from the Paul campaign to support Ron Paul. That would be a violation of ethics rules for a sitting State Senator.

Obviously, Michele Bachmann needs to go to prison for 40-50 years!

Michelle Bachmann is not accused of doing anything illegal or unethical. Kent Sorenson seems to be mentally unstable at best.

Thanks Olog-hai.
Sen. Kent Sorenson told The Associated Press that he had already decided he would not run for re-election, and... his decision was “absolutely not” an admission of wrongdoing... Sorenson negotiated payments in 2011 that eventually reached $7,500 monthly in exchange for his work as Bachmann’s Iowa campaign chair. The money flowed from Bachmann’s political action committee, MichelePAC, and her presidential campaign to a Colorado consulting firm, which in turn paid Sorenson’s Iowa-based firm, Weinhardt wrote in the report filed with the Iowa Senate.

Will they still prosecute him or let him walk for resigning?

Sorenson is a sleaze in my opinion. He worked for Bachmann and was shady with how this money was handled that he received.
Then he stabbed her in the back and went to work for Paul for likely a good sum of money

He is a conservative, evangelical (he thinks anyway) Republican actually.

He left Bachmann’s campaign right before the caucuses to work for Paul’s campaign, for a good amount of $$ people think.

It is quite possible that Sorenson will be prosecuted for perjury for various denials that he has made under oath. The state Senate ethics rules are not criminal law but he was obviously headed for expulsion, hence his resignation.

For those who might be wondering, Governor Branstad must call a special election, which will likely be in late November or December. Senate District 13 registration leans Republican slightly. Democrats have controlled the Iowa Senate 26-24 since 2010.
