US shutdown closes iconic D-Day cemeteries in France
France 24 International News 24/7 ^ | 10/2/2013 | FRANCE24

Iconic military cemeteries around the world where thousands of American soldiers who died in the First and Second World Wars lay to rest were temporarily closed from Tuesday due to the US government shutdown.

A sign outside the Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial, west of Paris, informed visitors of its closure. “Due to the United States government shutdown, this site is closed to the public”

But Suresnes isn’t the only one. The move affects some 20 cemeteries in France, Belgium, Britain, Italy, Tunisia and Mexico which serve as the final resting place for troops who died in landmark campaigns such as the Normandy D-Day landings, the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) said on its website.

“”From what I’ve read these cemeteries are maintained beautifully and respectfully.....by the French!
So we get off closing down property in THEIR country
WHY exactly??””

I don’t understand that either. We certainly don’t dispatch our military to those places to guard/man cemeteries. WHO is on the premises? Embassy staff?

I’m with you - I want to know the answer to WHY...

The guy was installed. He’s been vested with the authority of Office yet the constraint of Law doesn’t apply to him, he issues edicts and ignores Law he dislikes. He’s not a President, he’s an emperor.

The monuments in Washington are normally accessible 24/7. The so-called “closings” are absurd.

I don’t recall barricades in past shut downs. But this time all campers in National Forests and Parks are being told to leave the campgrounds and they are being barricaded.

Obama has always hated any call on him to show respect for our troops who have died for our country. That has been evident in many different ways. Remember when he neglected to go to Arlington Cemetery on Memorial Day, because he was too busy campaigning and golfing. Nor has he done anything but ignore the constant stream of troops who have been killed in Afghanistan since he took office, largely because of the onerous Rules of Engagement he has imposed on them. And he seems to take pleasure in insulting their families.

Well, if there’s federal money going into the cemetery, then shut it down.

If you make an exception for a cemetery, very soon you could have the entire federal government running without a budget.

No worries. We don’t dispatch military to guard ambassadors either. Just jump the barricades. That’s what Muslim terrorists do.

People should have got a clue when Obama refused the Pledge of Allegiance and didn’t want “that” on his lapel - a flag lapel pin.

You’d hate to have people just going there and, you know, walking around.

No government, no graves. That’s final and we will not negotiate!

I think they are maintained by an American commission. At least no one is being singled out. lol There are closures in our military graveyards all over Europe.

It is. I was back there in April, and I have forgotten the name of the department, but it is maintained by the United States.
