Boner is temporarily doing the right thing.

I’m waiting for the sellout, but hoping it never comes.

He might be. I still think that Veterans currently receiving disability will continue to receive disability. I think the business yesterday about the VA concerned pending disability claims. I believe that the VA employees looking at new and appealed disability claims are funded through October. The easiest way to solve this dilemma is to approve all new claims and appeals.....just like Obama did with all those make-believe pig farmers. Turnabout is fair play.

The White House and congressional Democrats aren’t satisfied with simply shutting the government down. Today the president reiterated his threat to veto a simple, common-sense measure to stand with our nation’s veterans and ensure that veterans’ programs are funded during the shutdown. This comes after the president and Democrats supported the Pay Our Military Act to take care of our men and women in uniform during this time (though they are still playing political games).

With the backlog of disability claims continuing to pile up and veterans having to wait longer and longer to receive their benefits, it is unconscionable that Democrats voted against the Honoring our Promise to America’s Veterans Act (H.J. Res. 72) yesterday to ensure that the Department of Veterans’ Affairs had the resources necessary to address this claims backlog. A small group of House Democrats voted for the measure, acknowledging their party’s strategy is indefensible. Every House Democrat will have the opportunity to do the right thing today.

The president can’t continue to complain about the impact of his government shutdown on veterans while pledging to veto a bill to help them. During the last government shutdown which lasted from December 16, 1995, to January 5, 1996, President Clinton did the right thing and signed into law – with the full support of congressional Democrats – a similar measure to ensure the veterans’ programs were funded. Nearly two decades later, President Obama and House Democrats have made the political choice to turn their backs on veterans.

Boehner has already announced that he plans to retire and not be Speaker in the next session

I don't think that's correct. There was an article recently sourcing unnamed aides who claimed he was strongly considering retirement, but AFAIK, he hasn't made any announcement.

They are using the veterans as pawns in their never-ending “blame the republicans” game.

Btw, it’s an open air monument, it was privately paid for,

Yes:

http://www.wwiimemorial.com/default.asp?page=funding.asp&subpage=intro

"The National World War II Memorial was funded almost entirely by private contributions, as specified in Public Law 103-32. The campaign received more than $197 million in cash and pledges. Support came from hundreds of thousands of individual Americans, hundreds of corporations and foundations, veterans groups, dozens of civic, fraternal and professional organizations, states and one territory, and students in 1,200 schools across the country.

Donated and pledged funds were used to cover the total project costs of approximately $182 million. These costs include site selection and design, construction and sculpture, a National Park Service maintenance fee required by the Commemorative Works Act, groundbreaking and dedication ceremonies, fund raising, and the 11-year administrative costs of the project from its inception in 1993 through completion in 2004.

Remaining funds are held on deposit with the U.S. Treasury in a National WWII Memorial Trust Fund. The funds will be used by the American Battle Monuments Commission solely to benefit the World War II Memorial."

At the beginning there was a fund drive by Tom Hanks. My family responded, in honor of our father, a WWII vet. Initially everyone was promised that each donation made in a veteran's name would result in the name being inscribed somewhere at the monument. Later on that was turned into an online freebie.

All this should be well known to the local park rangers, guides and docents.

I listened to a history of Speaker Boehner’s career, and he was supposedly like Senator Cruz at one time. Believe it not, he was a strong conservative once upon a time. It must be disappointing to have accomplished so little in such a career. If there’s a conservative bone left somewhere in Boehner’s body, let’s hope he retires with a bang.

There’s one thing I appreciate about President Obama’s administration. His disdain for everything that made this country great is palpable, and the Democrats no longer even try to hide their agenda. They led a largely covert operation for decades, mouthing platitudes about respect for the law, etc. If we can think the deal president for anything, it’s for bringing the left out into the open!

So what does this have to do with Speaker Boehner? There’s very little room for compromise left. At some point, Boehner either has to take a stand or sit idly by while the left fundamentally transforms America. Let’s hope he’s made the right decision, and if he has, we should support him all the way.

I’m hoping Republicans double down. So the Democrats didn’t like the earlier attempts at compromise? Fine. Pass a complete repeal of Obamacare and hold firm. Speaker Boehner has the votes for that, too (he also has enough quisling Republican votes to pass the Senate’s bloated CR).

I elected my senators and representatives to fight for smaller government—a return to constitutional governance. I’m willing to compromise, but compromise doesn’t mean the Democrats always get just slightly less than they propose. For example, I want the Department of Education to be completely eliminated, but I’m willing to compromise by cutting it into little more than an advisory council for the States.

I dare say the Republican-held House was elected to thwart President Obama’s agenda, not rubber stamp it. If we wanted Democrats or even squishy moderate Republicans in the House, we would could have easily elected them, but we did not.

Hold firm, Mr. Boehner! America really is worth saving, and that has to start somewhere. It might as well be now.

That's interesting and a good point. I vaguely recall that when he was made Speaker, people had initially felt fairly positive about him. Obama sure got him to knuckle under fast enough. I guess Boehner just wasn't a fighter, or didn't realize, perhaps, that the whole battle had changed.

On the other hand there are around 80 Conservatives he needs to remain Speaker. Self preservation trumps caving. The 80 are heroes.

But he will, because he's a blackhearted communist hypocrite.

One thing he should ask is why the government couldn’t keep the monument open but could hire all these people with forklifts to put up barricades.

Are there barricades around the MLK memorial? Inquiring minds want to know.
