German Typhoons to be fully air-to-ground capable in 2017

The German Air Force is expecting to field a fully air-to-ground capable Eurofighter Typhoon combat aircraft in 2017, a senior military official said in late September.

Speaking at the IQPC Close Air Support conference in London, Lieutenant Colonel Roland Runge, Section Head Tactical Reconnaissance, German Air Force, said that aircrew training with the Raytheon GBU-48 Enhanced Paveway II 1,000 lb precision-guided bomb will commence in 2014, ahead of an initial operating capability being declared in 2015/16. ALL aircraft are air-to-ground capable.

I did some work on a project that interfaced with the Typhoon a while back. The trickiness of working with the multinational consortium is pretty nasty. It does not surprise me that it is taking them this long to get all the right paperwork and approvals. If there was an emergency situation they could hang bombs on that thing today. But in peace time the bureaucracy will not be denied.
