Doesn’t that hospital serve a majority black community? I thought I read that somewhere. If so, I’m a bit surprised and pleased to see this information get through the MSM’s iron curtain.

If all its patients just follow Michelle’s dietary and exercise guide lines all of them should not have any health problems and thus need the hospital. (sarcasm)

It serves all of Atlanta and is supported by a 1% sales tax in Fulton and Dekalb counties. It had the best trauma unit in all of Georgia, and a fine burn unit as well (not as good as Augusta though). A lot of poor people in Atlanta depend on that hospital, black and white alike. With the upcoming cuts in Medicaid (as well as Medicare) it will get to a point where doctors and hospitals reach a breaking point, which basically is what Obamacare is designed to do.

“I wonder what that 45 mil represents as a percentage of it’s normal income?”

According to their 2012 Annual Report, gross revenue (net of uncollectible fees for service) was $879.4 million. So $45 million is a chunk!

Grady may be better off with Medicaid expansion because it is a safety net hospital and could make up the loss with volume but hospitals generally lose money on Medicaid which is why expansion isn’t a cure-all for anything.

Were all these hospitals and companies holding off on their announcements hoping the republicans would stop it from being implemented? All of a sudden companies are very publicly ANNOUNCING they’re cutting hours and hospitals are telling about losses.

I can see Doctors quitting Zerocare out of pure frustration.
And the amount of money they'll need to fork out for the labor just to file.
Then there are the checks in the mail months down the road. What a disaster it will be.

I won't even bother signing up. I don't even want to know what the costs are.

If it is an inner city hospital (which it sounds like) I would be very surprised if it is not operating at a loss already. I can guarantee you they are not making anywhere near a 45 million dollar profit. This if sustained would sink any hospital. Imagine our cities without an inner city hospital with a level one trauma unit . Where will these patients go?

Most hospitals across the country are barely scraping by as is. Medicare and Medicaid are not enough to keep the doors open. When Obamacare hits many will likely have to close. In most major cities (and surrounding suburbs) there are not enough hospital beds to handle a bad flu season let alone an epidemic or mass casualty event. Of course that’s OK because we already have a nursing and doctor shortage. More people may have “insurance” but the system is marginal to start with and could easily collapse like a string of legos falling. Then where will all the newly insured and all the rest of us go for health care?? And don’t forget the aging of the population I’d already straining the system as more people awe getting too the age where they are more likely to need hospitalization but are moving into the lower paying Medicare population. I don’t think many hospital CEOs are sleeping well at night

It’s a heart-of-Atlanta public hospital. Funded largely by two counties and a budget from the state of Georgia.

So it has a huge contingent of non-paying patients, victims who sometimes have insurance who have unfortunately been hurt near there, etc.

Lately the hospital has been heavily advertising its expertise in burns, emergency services, diseases etc. trying to get metro-area insurance patients to use it.

One thing I’ll say is that it is the most capable hospital for gunshot wounds, knife wounds and the like - first rate trauma also.

If I were in an accident near there, I’d be taken there and I wouldn’t mind for a short while (to get stabilized) I’d then transfer somewhere else for recovery.

Medical insurance began as a result of wage controls in WWII and after. Employers had to offer something that wasn’t wage controlled.

Yes Kaiser Steel. And it got so danged expensive when people realized it was 3rd payer and "free" they also invented the HMO to try to control cost.

And you dovetail on a larger thought that is impossible for America to get it's arms around could if you go their it also means do you disassemble Medicare/Medicaid ( or try serious free-market models ) because the Kaiser experiment we all are living is wrong and do we go back before Kaiser?

Or...

Do we adopt a "universal template" of a free-market nature.

The plan in mind I have is one touted by a State Senator here in Michigan and it failed in the Senate by one vote ( turncoat Rino did it ). This plan the brainchild of Sen. Pat Colbeck, combines the Obama Loop-Hole of "concierge service" with what is now almost illegal Health Savings Accounts. So you pay a primary care a flat rate per month for unlimited service while you have catastrophic / HSA if you get hit by the bus.

We need to ween ourselves from 3rd party payer, or go with the model I suggested, or we will end up with single payer...

The article explains the reason for the federal funding loss. ObamaCare increased Medicaid eligibility. Medicaid is primarily a state responsibility, but the federal government helps fund it. To help pay for the increase in Medicaid, the federal government reduced grants to hospitals.

The ObamaCare Medicaid expansion puts a large, unfunded mandate on the states. The increased federal funding of the Medicaid expansion is temporary. Some Republican governors agreed to participate in the Medicaid expansion (Ohio, New Jersey), because they felt they could not turn down the federal dollars. Others rejected it because they felt even with the federal dollars, in a few years when the federal dollars were reduced, they would no be able to maintain the funding for the expansion.

Revenue isn’t income. Income is whats left after expenses are deducted from revenues. we can say they have a negative margin of 5.1%, that is to say for every dollar in revenue they will lose about a nickel providing revenue were to stay the same. I am sure they are looking at greater revenues with smaller reimbursements thus accounting for the loss.

At a guess they try and balance revenues with expenses and likely operate at a small loss yearly. They probably get donations, gifts, which make up for losses. In NYC all the hospitals have buildings or wings named after donors.

If you’re in a car wreck in Atlanta, you want to go to Grady. Best trauma center in GA.

A few years ago my husband had a detached retina and didn’t have insurance. He went to Grady’s emergency room, was bumped to the top of the line, had a room in a few hours and was operated on the next day. His eye was saved. Couldn’t have gotten better care.

Overpriced medical care in the USA is a direct result of private or public health insurance and way too much of the costs going to those not providing actual health care.

drivel......

The root cause is lawyers enriching them selves by suing ever doctor that moves. The legal assumption that medicine is a perfect science and any deviation from perfection is subject to money damages is the problem.

From that premise grows innumerable branches of costs that are in effect defense attorney court room evidenciary statements needed to educate an ignorant jury intent on hanging the doctor or hospital

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

That is EXACTLY what the unaffordable don’t give a damn act is designed to do, the only mystery is why anyone ever thought otherwise. I really cannot understand how we have descended to the level that we have. We dropped the voting age to 18 when we should have been raising it to 50 and eliminating anyone who is not a self supporting citizen able to read, write and understand the constitution. Of course that last part would mean that most of our judges, including half of the Supremes, would not be allowed to vote.

12 years ago (+/- ) Grady proposed some sort of co-pay increase for its low income clientele.
It was very reasonable, I thought.
From $0.00 to $5.00 (or close)
You would not believe the protests and headlines. My God, you would have thought Grady said unless you give us $5.00, you can ESAD because we are not treating you and no one else will.
Cuts will have to be made. If it comes out of the patients’ pockets who will they blame? Grady or obamacare?
