The President is an ex-community organizer. Compromise and negotiation aren't really his MO. It's more like extortion under threat of disorder; manipulation of the legal system; and silver-tongued oratory that excites his backers and misleads those he wishes to extract concessions from.
You also have to consider Obama's street cred. "His" people don't know how little respect he commands internationally, but there's so much MSM attention paid to the budget crisis that he has to stand up and act tough. He's doing it on principle, "for them."
