Senate tosses shutdown hot potato back to House

President Barack Obama said Friday that new exchanges for private health insurance under Obamacare will open next week as scheduled even if there is a government shutdown, adding: "That's a done deal."

In a congressional version of hot potato, the Senate on Friday passed a short-term spending plan that would prevent a looming government shutdown and sent it to the House for a weekend showdown between Republican tea party conservatives and their more moderate party leaders.

The 54-44 vote on strict party lines came after Senate Democrats pushed through an amendment to restore funding for Obamacare that House Republicans had eliminated in their version of the spending measure, which would prevent the start of a government shutdown on Tuesday.

Now House Speaker John Boehner must decide whether to urge his divided Republican caucus to vote with Democrats to pass the Senate plan, or yield again to a hardline conservative wing that demands making continued government funding contingent on undermining Obamacare.

Cruz loses filibuster bid

President Barack Obama, who has criticized Republicans for their attacks on his signature health care reforms, will make a previously unscheduled public statement at 3:30 p.m. ET on Friday, the White House announced.

I keep hearing the answer it to take back the senate and the white house. I’m not sure that can be done with the way the democrats have perfected voter fraud. Plus, will the country survive 2 years of obamacare?

Going to be a big difference when the party nuters him. The senator is on top today but if this fails, and I can’t see an end game in which it don’t, all you have to do is look at polling, his friends will distance themselves. Don’t underestimate the power of the establishment is immense. Should you win you become a star but when a coup fails what happens?

Neuter him how? They already won't give him any chairmanships or ranking member status on committees. He'll keep getting elected, and being a pain in their arse.

I despise defeatists.

People said the same thing about Medicare. Ted said the same thing in a speech once people get addicted to the subsidies you will never get rid of it, like Medicare. In the end Obamacare won’t kill the US. The size of the government will.

Defeatist? Nah, realist. We can disagree for now just remember this conversation when the process stories start. We can look forward to he hates puppie stories soon.

I hope I am wrong. I doubt I am.

He's already being pilloried from the floor of the senate by republicans. Do you think he cares? Do you think the Texans that elected him care?

He's going to be up their noses for at LEAST the next 5 years. There is NOTHING that anyone can do about that.

Folks, now that the Senate has done us a great favor, we can focus again on the House. That's where this will be won or lost. And I think there is a fair chance that we can eke some small victory out of this.

As for the Senate, they were never going to vote for cloture. It was really just a question of how many senators would vote with the people, and how many would do as they normally do and vote to screw everybody else. Well, we got our answer: 19 voted with the people, which is actually 4 more than I expected. But more importantly, we now know exactly WHO the Patriots are and who the cowards and kakistocrats are.

But wait. It doesn't stop there. Today's vote was really a two-fer, the gift that didn't stop giving! At no time in my life have the political differences been so stark, the choices so obvious, and the villainy so apparent. Today, the majority of gop members in the Senate stood up and did something I never really thought I would see: they publicly murdered their own political party.

“Defeatism is a lousy way to go through life.”

It is. Whether mcconnellcare is funded or not comes down to the House. That’s always been the case.

Sure got a lot of eeyores around here.

Classical conditioning based on giving a crap what other people who don't matter think. It makes defeatists out of them.

There will be a difference when people roll there eyes and actively weak revenge. Once again maybe he will win and I am wrong.

A question. How does Ted win this? Be specific. I have played this scenario out in my head many ways. I can’t see it. Help me see how this ends up anywhere besides a shutdown and republicans looking bad. History has showed in the past what will happen.

“Classical conditioning based on giving a crap what other people who don’t matter think. It makes defeatists out of them.”

Spot on, Johnny.

I think we won a lot more today than we lost. We were never going to win the vote in the Senate. Period. This has always been a House issue. But the gop majority in the Senate gave us a couple of things that were far more precious than cloture: they self-identified who the wolves were, plus they essentially murdered their own political party in the process.

So I’m supposed to be sad over this? Come on! If anything I want to crack the champagne!

He's already won it. He's brought more pressure to bear on DC this week, especially pressure on the liberal GOP, than all of the pundits and scenario spinners ever have.

Phone lines were melting. Obamacare is back front and center and Reid and his buddies HATE it.

You do know the (R)house picked up seats after the last shutdown...

Don't believe everything you hear in the media. Get rid of your television and look at real history, not the media spin.

Cowardly Senators couldn’t wait to toss this back to House where Republicans will get blame.
So what did Pub traitors in Senate gain from voting with Dems on Cloture? NOTHING!

House lost 8 seats but kept majority, republicans picked up 2 in senate. I am well aware of history. Polling was reverse until Newt had the thing with Rabin. Polling is very different today. I do not think your vision of winning has even come close to playing out yet. Dems are enjoying this.

Dems are getting nervous. The liberal GOP is hating it. King is an example. People in fly-over country are worked up enough that folks in DC are complaining about the phone calls.

Liberal republican senators exposed themselves in public, and the public is pissed.

Sounds like Cruz has already done more in his 9 months than the GOP-E has done in years.
