Senate defeats Cruz filibuster, passes bill that funds Obamacare
The Washington Times ^ | September 27, 2013 | Stephen Dinan

Senators from both parties linked arms to defy Sen. Ted Cruz, overcoming his attempt to filibuster the stopgap spending bill, which allowed Democrats to add back in full funding for Obamacare and power the bill through the chamber.

The 79-19 vote saw 25 Republicans join with all Democrats to advance the bill, easily overcoming Mr. Cruz and his allies who had argued this was the key point that would determine whether major parts of President Obama’s health care law take effect next week.

Once that hurdle was cleared, the rest of the votes were preordained. The Senate waived budget rules, voted to strip out the Obamacare defunding on a 54-44 party line vote, and passed the bill.

The bill now heads back to the House, where Republicans are struggling to figure out a path forward, trapped between a right wing which insists on full defunding and Senate Democrats, who just proved that stance cannot succeed.

“This is like the movie ‘High Noon. The two sides are walking down the street. I just hope that like the movie ‘High Noon,’ I hope the good guys win,” said Sen. Tom Harkin, an Iowa Democrat who accused Mr. Cruz and his allies of being anarchists, hoping to destroy government altogether.

He said the country is facing a situation “every bit as dangerous” as the lead-up to the Civil War....

When you're on the same side as Comrade Tom Harkin, you're no Republican!

Bill goes nowhere, however, without House’s nod. Keep up the hard ball, Cruz....

Truth. And look at the percentages of the non-Democrat votes...roughly 25% RINO, 20% Conservative.

That is, sadly, probably far off...

Well, he's right about that, but not for the reasons he thinks. There's a storm wind blowing...

If someone can post who voted for cloture I would appreciate it. Be nice to know which side of the butter is breaded with our senators.

Thanks.

I think this shows that it's time for a peaceful negotiation for splitting the USA into two pieces.

The Socialist side will begin to crumble after about 2 years while our prosperity will skyrocket!

THANK ALL Y’ALL FOR YOUR UNTIRING EFFORTS TO HARASS AND SOON REPLACE OUR SORRY “GOP SENATORS.”

LET US ENDEAVOR TO CAUSE OUR SORRY GOP SENATORS TO GROW EVEN MORE “INCREASINGLY IRRITATED.”

THE NEW REPUBLICAN PARTY WAS BORN ON THE US SENATE FLOOR WHEN SENATOR TED CRUZ BEGAN HIS 21 HOUR INSPIRATIONAL FILIBUSTER.

WE IN THE NEW REPUBLICAN PARTY ARE IN HIS DEBT.

THIS IS JUST ONE OF MANY BATTLES TO TAKE CONTROL OF THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE.

WE WILL PREVAIL !

Never have I seen the federal government so opposed to those citizens demanding liberty, justice and freedom. The lines have been drawn and the Republican establishment have made it abundantly clear on which side they stand.

I have a plan, the House funds Obamacare for $1.00 and cuts IRS funding in half. Then the Dems will have to fight on two fronts and good luck trying to convince the American people to give IRS more money.

A word to the wise: start giving the salutes not to Cruz but to the Cross (or more particularly the One who died on it, then rose again, forging a road upon which the dying and dead may be set and thus revived).

That's the real face of the Senate.

We are not represented fairly and the nation is lost without a real sweep of both houses.

It galls me that 75% of the Senate is laughing at us, tsk tsk'ing, and going on about the dismantleing of our Republic.

Alas America ... at least I got to know ye ...

Well at least we can leave the GOP with a clear mind and with no regrets. We gave them so much leeway and they caved in every time to the left. The RINOS, otherwise known as Democratic Party infiltrators, showed us their hand time and time again, and we kept forgiving them. Now with a clear conscience we can say sayonara to the sorry Republican Party.
