Senate Reaches Cloture, 79-19, on House-Passed Spending Bill
Townhall.com ^ | 9/27/2013 | Daniel Doherty

Senator Ted Cruz and the rest of his “defund” crew have consistently said that a vote for cloture on the House-passed spending bill is akin to a vote for Obamacare. But unfortunately for them, the much-anticipated votes are in and the news isn’t great. As it happens, the Senate voted, 79-19, to end debate on the spending bill all but guaranteeing that the provision explicitly defunding Obamacare will be stripped -- and the amended bill eventually kicked back to the House of Representatives.

Twitchy breaks down what just happened in simplistic and easy-to-understand terms:

There were many Republicans in the Senate who voted “yes” on the continuing resolution, which is essentially a vote against defunding Obamacare. Exceeding 60 votes means there will be no more debate on the spending bill.

Having gotten the 60 votes means that Harry Reid will now only need a simple majority of votes in order to put the funding for Obamacare back into the spending bill.

In other words, Obamacare won’t be defunded. Stay tuned for updates.

UPDATE: Senator Cruz released the following statement:

"Today's vote by Sen. Harry Reid and the Senate Democrats to fully fund Obamacare was yet the latest example of Washington not listening to the people.

"Obamacare is a 'train wreck,' a 'nightmare,' to use the words of its Democratic author and a union leader who previously supported the bill. It is the biggest job killer in America.

"As Teamsters President James Hoffa explained in a letter to Sen. Harry Reid and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Obamacare is hurting 'millions of working men and women ... and the families they support,' and it 'will destroy the very health and wellbeing of our members along with millions of other hardworking Americans.'

"Senate Democrats refused to listen.

"President Obama has granted exemptions for big business and Members of Congress, but Senate Democrats refuse to grant the American people the same exemption. Instead, they used political power to maintain their privileged position while doing nothing to respond to the pleas of millions of Americans.

"But this fight continues. Now the bill returns to the House. The House showed remarkable courage voting to defund Obamacare, and I hope and believe that the House will stand by their resolve and continue to lead the effort to stop the Obamacare train wreck.

"Obamacare is killing jobs, forcing people into part-time work, causing health insurance premiums to skyrocket, and threatening the healthcare of millions of Americans.

"Today, far too many Republicans joined Harry Reid in giving the Democrats the ability to fund Obamacare. When the bill comes back to the Senate, when the House yet again stands for principle and fights for the American people, I very much hope that Senate Republicans will rise to the challenge. We are stronger when we are united, and we can defeat Obamacare only if Senate Republicans come together, stand with House Republicans, and champion the millions of Americans being harmed by this disastrous healthcare law."

Hear! Hear! I've been saying all along we need a conservative party that's named "The Conservative Party." There are tens of millions that are "Conservative" at heart but they belong to various other parties or are inactive because they refuse to enable and endorse the behavior of the demoncrap party's little brother... The republican party. We need to get our Conservative legislators OUT of the republican party. I believe the millions of Conservatives that have become disenchanted with the jerks in Washington will join such a party and help to eradicate the absolute craziness and stupidity that has infected our nation's capital.

Of course this is my opinion but founded in hope. God says, "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14)

Never in the history of man has there been a "Christian" nation until the United States of America was founded on Christian principles. Never in the history of man has any group of people been called by Christ's name until Jesus Christ rose from the dead and reconciled us back to God and made all us believers members of His body. We, Christians, are the Body of Christ. NEVER, in the history of man has the above scripture been more pertinent than it is today.

Will the good people of this nation repent and throw out the devil's minions in Washington via the Constitutional tools afforded us by God and our founding fathers or will we sit by and let the antichrist's agenda continue to march forward unimpeded? Ted Cruz proved that one man is not enough to turn the tide. We must all stand up and hold accountable those that have lied to and betrayed us, their bosses... their constituents.

Yes we did, with the help of Shelby and Sessions. I think secession is next, along with a general strike against paying Fed. income tax. We have to destroy this federal government in it’s present form. Texas will lead the way in secession, and the Southern States will follow. You want to tax me Obama, stick it!

Flake backed out?! Utter piece of crap!

Two Republican senators abstained from voting:

Flake - They don't call him Flake for nothing
Hatch

They didn't even vote! Like 0bama, they voted 'present'. Crap, indeed.

This is an email I got from my Senator. This is how they fool the public but when it comes to having the balls to walk the walk they cave. Cochran did the same thing too.

Thank you for contacting me regarding your support for defunding and repealing the President’s health-care law. I am glad to have the benefit of your views on this issue, and I agree that this massive government overhaul of health care in America should be fully repealed.

The President’s health-care law greatly increases the government’s role in our health-care system, fails to lower costs, and raises taxes and premiums. The tax increases in this law will cost the American public more than $675 billion over the next ten years. Skyrocketing premiums and co-payments will limit access to doctors for too many Mississippians. I support lower premiums and patients’ freedom to choose their providers. I believe in workable solutions that empower patients – not unelected bureaucrats – in their health-care decisions.

Already in the 113th Congress, I have joined my colleagues in introducing numerous bills to repeal or defund all or part of the President’s health-care law. I am a co-sponsor of Senator Ted Cruz’s bill to prohibit funding for this detrimental law. As a member of the Senate Budget Committee, I offered an amendment during the consideration of the Fiscal Year 2014 Budget that would have defunded the President’s health-care law and prevented $1.8 trillion in new spending for its implementation.

My repeal amendment, which was blocked by Senate Democrats, would have prohibited the use of taxpayer dollars to implement the 2,700-page law and its 19,000 pages of regulations. These countless rules, mandates and taxes will slow the economy and grow the government, stifling job creation and adding uncertainty to an already fragile economy.

Be assured I will continue to work in Congress to defund and repeal the President’s harmful health-care law in its entirety and replace it with meaningful solutions. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can ever assist you.

With best wishes, I am

Sincerely yours,

Roger F. Wicker
U.S. Senate”

This picture makes me sick to my stomach. Right before it was taken they all went and got expensive haircuts. Right after it was taken they all went and got a drink together.

Good for you but they will keep mailing and calling to beg for your donation.
We are just a vote and a check. Nothing more. With a few exceptions, they do not represent me.

You are not a chump.

Those that voted “aye”-—they are the chumps—they knew they were deceivers.

We believed in America as God created her, in the truth, in right.

You can never be wrong believing that.

Thanks for that list. It’s nice to see my senator, Pat Toomey, get something right for a change.
The rest of the Republican senators are cowards. Despicable cowards.

He understands that. That's part of the reasons he put himself in this situation. However, he also understands that in the US system of government, there are procedures that have to be followed, and Obamacare 'passed' the hurdles. First when John Roberts decided it was tax and hence constitutional as long as Congress approves it, and second when the majority of his fellow senators (and perhaps, the Congress) decided to side with Obama.

You may not like it, but if the Scotus already decided that Obamacare is constitutional, where else can one appeal to? The way it is now, only Congress can repeal it.
