Even the most decent, human society has people in its midst who will blindly follow a charismatic leader, and would-be dictators who want the adoration of the crowd.

Germany was an advanced, educated society, with serious contributions to the sciences and the arts. Students came to Germany to study. Nor was Germany the most anti-Semitic country in Europe; Jews there had mostly assimilated and held all manner of positions and offices. Intermarriage with Christians was possible, and socially not the end of the world. Many Jews served as officers in the Kaiser's army in WW1~they considered themselves loyal Germans.

If Nazism could happen in Germany, something analogous could happen here. Just listen to the hateful language of the left; you know perfectly well what they would do the right if they thought they could get away with it.

How could a society which was once viewed as so culturally advanced, allow such a monster as Hitler to so twist their minds and hearts?

It did not happen overnight.

Hitler had a slick PR group. He did not just happen upon the mannerisms, the look, the torchlight parades, the enormous rallies. He carried on his political campaign by flying from city to city--just remember how novel air travel was in the early 1930s. He posed as a representative of the future, and as the man who would restore Germany's honor after the defeat in WW1.

There are many people who can be led. You can sell them anything. Watch Obama delivering a speech to his worshippers--he can say anything, and they will cheer. Hitler had the same kind of following: look at the faces of the women in the newsreels. They look entranced.

No, the Germans did not have a special depravity. Culturally, the US is heavily influenced by German immigrants, but we're not much aware of it because during WW1 streets were renamed and everything Germanic was pushed out of mind. Much of what is fun about American Christmas has roots in Germany.

Liberals used to love to say such things, but in reality that isn't the way it works. Americans have always been pretty independent and it is reflected in our culture and military, which isn't true of places like Germany and France, and other nations.

No where in my statement did I say she got an Oscar. The accolades I referred to was from the Oscar Crowd and that was in 2004.

Again, I never said her movies were anti-Semitic. They were racist and propoganda however as they extolled the superiority of the Aryan race. How is that not racist? She used gypsys from concentration camps as extras in a movie. How is that not despicable? Hitler was a guest at her wedding in 1944. She was a true believer. And the Hollywood crowd in 2004 included her in memoriam and gave her a big round of applause.

I've read Jonathan Carr's 'The Wagner Clan' so I'm well aware of the incidents you're referring to. Winifred was cowardly and concerned first and foremost about the 'family business' (and her own safety). BTW Winifred's other daughter Verena Wagner (on the right in the photo) is still alive.

Jerry Bruckheimer’s comment about her is the plain and honest truth. She was a genius and her films were technically astonishing and highly influential. She pretty much invented sports photography. Praising her technical accomplishments is no different than opera houses holding Wagner festivals. Are the people who applaud and attend proto anti-semites? Of course not and neither was the Oscar crowd. Nothing she did after the war suggests that she had anything thing of the true believer in her...just an opportunist. She’s certainly more guilty than Eisenstein who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time but I wouldn’t put her in the same group with murderers.

Did you read the article this post was from? In the article: "A mass of secretaries, for example, typed the orders to kill and filed the details of massacres. As I mentioned in a previous post, how are they more culpable than what Reifenstahl did? They didn't gas anyone, just as Leni didn't. But they certainly contributed to the Holocaust. Just as Leni did.

As for Hollywood cheering on Leni and it's right to cheer on the artist and ignore their sins. Not the first time I've heard this. Just a question, how come just the year before when Elia Kazan (a director who happened to actually make great movies in Hollywood. Unlike Refeinstahl who never made one Hollywood movie) went to receive his lifetime achievement Oscar did so many of the Hollywood intelligensia decry and boo him? Was not his art more important than his political stands?

Funny how many of the people Kazan outed were proved to be commie operatives via the Venona papers. But then, Kazan went against the Hollywood left, a big no no. Only he didn't make any propoganda films that lead to brainwashing people into believing they were the superior race and had a right to exterminate people.

One other thing about Richard Wagner. I don’t think he can be compared to what Refeinstahl did. Though he was an anti semite to be sure, as far as I know he did not actively contribute to any Jewish pogroms or anything like that. He didn’t make music that progagandized people or had as it’s intent to brainwash people. That Hitler and the Nazis used his operas to champion racial superiority long after his death cannot be attributed to him.
