Federal tax expert Gene Steuerle said at a discussion on low-wage workers on Tuesday at the Capitol that government social welfare programs penalize low-income people for being married.
Staying unmarried is the tax shelter for the poor, Steuerle, a fellow at the Urban Institute and former deputy assistant secretary of the Treasury for tax analysis in the Ronald Reagan administration, said at an event to release a survey commissioned by Oxfam America on low-wage workers in the United States.

Not just low income couples either.
That’s what I thought was funny, it isn’t effective for the poor, but I know a lot of married people who have one making 6 figures plus and another making nothing. Be better off divorced and living together.
The marriage penalty which Obama reinstated when he took office.
I’ve known of people that live together and have children together but say they’re not married because of welfare perks and tax reasons.
We are teaching divide and conquer.
Unfortunately, there is also a “marriage penalty” which dates back to 1983. At that time it was decided to tax a certain amount of Social Security income. After adding up your various forms of income (wages, dividents, interest, rental income, business income, other pension payments), you were allowed to deduct $25,000 if you were single, or $32,000 if you were a couple.
Sadly, this deduction has been frozen for the past 30 years. If adjusted for inflation it should be over $50,000 for single and over $70,000 for married. As a widow on SS I would like to marry the fine man I have met recently. Unfortunately we cannot afford to give up $50,000 in deductions for only $32,000 deductions. I am sure there are many single and married retirees who are suffering from this basic unfairness. Contact your Congresspeople if you agree and inform your retired relatives and friends.
My wife and I have been advised we’d save money by getting a divorce. For instance, I’d have no VA co-pays. But I don’t want to stand before God and have Him say “Was the savings worth it?”
Oh I am sorry about your marriage predicament. The government sucks I am sorry to say I wish they would just knock it off already.
??
The poor don't pay taxes - - they eat.
...and have litters.
Good for you for doing the right thing!
“Ive known of people that live together and have children together but say theyre not married because of welfare perks and tax reasons.”
It has gone on for decades; now we have a permanent underclass of livestock that will never contribute anything. The Dems want to abort them out of existence, but need to keep subsidizing the breeding because they need the votes. Once they have enough Hispanic voters, the decades-old permanent underclass will be de-funded because they’ve been replaced.
Abortion, contraception, and welfare reservation violence seem to have finally turned the corner and gotten the upper hand against the falling birthrate of this underclass; in my area they’re very obviously being replaced by Hispanics.
working poor. you lose eic.
AMEN! Good for you.
