How the Tea Party is winning the GOP fight over ObamaCare
The Week ^ | Sept 18, 2013 | By Jon Terbush

Posted on 09/18/2013 8:38:30 AM PDT by Jim Robinson

Congressional Republicans have battled each other of late over which tack to take in handling the next showdown over the budget. The Tea Party wing of the party has refused to support any budget bill unless it kills ObamaCare, while the more moderate leadership, wary of the political fallout from such an all-or-nothing gamble, has resisted the plan.

It looks like the Tea Party just won round one.

House Republicans will soon stage a vote on a budget bill — known as a continuing resolution (CR) — that both funds the government and defunds the Affordable Care Act, according to National Review's Robert Costa. This means that far-right conservatives "have won a victory, at least in terms of getting the leadership to go along with their strategy," Costa wrote.

House Speaker John Boehner's (R-Ohio) spokesman said that "no decisions" have been made regarding the CR vote. But the fact that the bill is even up for consideration underscores how effective the Tea Party has been in bulldozing the rest of the party on such a fraught issue.

Assuming a CR bill defunding ObamaCare passes the House, it would surely die in the Democratic-controlled Senate. And even if it were to somehow pass the upper chamber, it has absolutely zero chance of getting past President Obama's desk.

Washington's fiscal year comes to a close at the end of the month. If there is no deal by then, the government will shut down all nonessential services. While that would be less calamitous than a previously floated idea to tie ObamaCare to the debt ceiling, linking a vote to defund ObamaCare to the budget would nonetheless be a bold line in the sand, drawn at the behest of a small, vocal corner of the party.

So how did we get here?

Sen. Cruz...

Time for some tough conservative talk. You can have a CR or Obamacare, but not both. You want Obamacare? Fine, give us a balanced budget that funds it. You want a CR? Fine, the only CR gets approved without Obamacare.

Too bad there's hardly anyone with the cajones to say that.

I'm becoming tired of being considered "Far Right." Fiscally responsible citizens with a healthy respect for our original constitution and purpose are now labelled radicals and extremists. The scary part of that is it is starting to grow roots.

Who today is considered "Far Left"? Anyone. It seems the whole "left" can go screaming down hill towards socialism/facism and centralized, all powerfull government and not get labelled. But the further they go, the further right we become while standing still on our positions.

Boener then is like a raft adrift in a left current while tea party type folks are deep heavy anchors resisting the current.

The best way to fix a broken system is to SHUT IT DOWN, and THEN fix it.

Newt SHUT DOWN the US Federal Government in the 1990’s and it WORKED!

The Liberal Agenda Media and the Democrats boo-hooed to this day, but Newt achieved success.

The only way to force a spoiled brat to behave is to punish, punish, punish.

The worst punishment that a Democrat, or RINO can imagine is to take away their ability to spend our tax dollars.

The best way to do that is to shutdown the non-essental parts of the US Federal Government, starting with mothballing Air Force One.

It’s like they picked up the whole political spectrum and moved the curve 3 sigma to the left. What used to be Center is now Far Right. It’s growing roots because as Reich Minister Goebbels proved, propaganda works.

Air Force One is considered ESSENTIAL.

What’s happened is that Obama has abused his use of it like no other before him.

Two different issues. Is Air Force One essential? And has Obama grossly abused its use?

I guess the rub is the term you use, "Fiscally responsible citizen".

If the "fiscally responsible citizen" thinks the US can cut her way out of her looming deficit problems, then that citizen is not very fiscally responsible.

The US will have to grow her way out of the problem.

And to make things worse, if the "Fiscally responsible citizen" wants to drive the nation over the cliff, or dance around the edge of the cliff, the citizen is impeding economic growth and hastening the collapse of the nation.

And the question becomes, what credentials does this "fiscally responsible citizen" have? What does he know about it?

Amen! 'Far right' = normal, gun-owning, Constitution-embracing Americans.

Is the ACA another blind alley like TARP...waste,fraud, and probably would not hold up in court as to Constitutional legality? Obamacare is constitutionally wrong, regardless of what Justice Roberts said....it is illegal and therefore I don’t have an obligation to obey any of the Obamacare ‘mandates’. Congress doesn’t want it for themselves or their staff; the Unions are railing against it and other factions want out. Why is there any reason to continue implementing this illegal monster, so toxic, so legally lethal every page should be incinerated, scattering the ashes to the winds.

How so very true! The political spectrum has indeed raced towards progressive socialism. JFK, with his positions on Business, taxes, government, strong credible Defense, RICO crime, would now be considered 'right' of Ronald Reagan.

The house should pass a CR with everything funded except for Obamacare. If the Senate ignores the House version and sends any CR bill to the House, it should be immediately blue slipped as an appropriation bill not originating in the House.

Question: If AF1 were to be mothballed, would B. Hussein Obama then sit in his Oval Office chair, as Clint Eastwood suggested, or would B. Hussein instead spend more of his free time playing Golf?

Algore would have to admit that “The Carbon Footprint” of AF1 has caused significant , and irreparable harm to the utopian hope that His Arrogantness Obama will ever be able to keep his promise to stop the rising of Global Ocean Level.

The only thing that is essential about AF1 is that it justifies Biden getting AF2 and Michelle getting AF3.

If Biden and Michelle are content with their Air Force Corporate Jets, that B. Hussein can spend more time Golfing.

BTW, just who is more uppity that the Obamas?

Some Republican staffers are sure to try sabotage.

And to all...good job with the calls and emails!
Now its time to fight the media!

The soundest strategy that meets both long term and short term goals isn’t defunding, which the story correctly notes will never pass the Senate, let alone Obama, but instead is suspending.

Suspending it gives you what you want short term, plus gives you the chance to continue to beat Democrats in election after election. Once you have a Congressional majority, then defund it.

We need to win and hold the Congress for at least a generation. Conservatives need to learn to play chess. The long game is what we lack.

Nonsense. Think about it, first. Now is the time for thoughtful compromise. Obama’s on the ropes, along with the Democrats, let’s keep them there.

First, you simply suspend Obamacare and pass that bill along to the Senate after making it clear that you’re doing it for the economy and the jobs situation. That’s your mantra - jobs, economy, economy, jobs - ad infinitum.

We need to win elections and we only control the House. We need to Senate (2014) and ideally the Presidency in 2016. Think long term. We can afford to be magnanimous and capture that mushy middle. Show them that we can work with them and then implement our agenda over time.

See the Commerce Clause and Wickard v. Filburn for how you can return the 50 states to an open, free trade zone. Watch America boom again.

If obama can pick and choose which laws will be enforced, the people can pick and choose which laws to obey.

Boehner hates the TEA Party, but they are his best neighbors in West Chester, Ohio where they all live.

The Cave In RINO way has never helped our Republic, but always helped the Democrats.

Sobber of the House Boehner is living proof of that mindset.

Well, also Cantor, McConnell, Romney, McCain, Dole, etc.

I call them the “Beltway Bastards.”
