How the Tea Party is winning the GOP fight over ObamaCare
The Week ^ | Sept 18, 2013 | By Jon Terbush

Posted on 09/18/2013 8:38:30 AM PDT by Jim Robinson

Congressional Republicans have battled each other of late over which tack to take in handling the next showdown over the budget. The Tea Party wing of the party has refused to support any budget bill unless it kills ObamaCare, while the more moderate leadership, wary of the political fallout from such an all-or-nothing gamble, has resisted the plan.

It looks like the Tea Party just won round one.

House Republicans will soon stage a vote on a budget bill — known as a continuing resolution (CR) — that both funds the government and defunds the Affordable Care Act, according to National Review's Robert Costa. This means that far-right conservatives "have won a victory, at least in terms of getting the leadership to go along with their strategy," Costa wrote.

House Speaker John Boehner's (R-Ohio) spokesman said that "no decisions" have been made regarding the CR vote. But the fact that the bill is even up for consideration underscores how effective the Tea Party has been in bulldozing the rest of the party on such a fraught issue.

Assuming a CR bill defunding ObamaCare passes the House, it would surely die in the Democratic-controlled Senate. And even if it were to somehow pass the upper chamber, it has absolutely zero chance of getting past President Obama's desk.

Washington's fiscal year comes to a close at the end of the month. If there is no deal by then, the government will shut down all nonessential services. While that would be less calamitous than a previously floated idea to tie ObamaCare to the debt ceiling, linking a vote to defund ObamaCare to the budget would nonetheless be a bold line in the sand, drawn at the behest of a small, vocal corner of the party.

So how did we get here?

Sen. Cruz...

If obama can pick and choose which laws will be enforced, the people can pick and choose which laws to obey.

Amen! Where's MY exemption?

What do we have to lose? Hopefully McCain, Graham, Boner, etc.

If AF1 is “essential,” then Obastard won’t have any trouble taking his hat in his hand, and asking Congress to specifically approve any use of it. Otherwise it’s just another perk of the job.

A big smooch to you for pounding these stories home, on FR. Major “atta’ boy”!

I repeat myself, but, we are right now in the eye of the storm, or else Lee, Cruz and Paul would be swarming the press conferences with solid information. They are not.

Methinks they are in the trenches leaning on some folks, and cracking arms.

McConnel for sure. Thanks, Mr. Jim.

With my approach there isn’t any ‘cave-in’. It’s a honey trap for the Democrats and Obama.

We’re not in a position to win. We can win, but not now. We need a long vision here. We need to win and run things, get it?

Make the fight about all these C's. Ask why the Senate can't pass a budget in the first place.

Obama can ride his bus to his campaign stops and vacations. He doesn’t need to pollute the earth with that big old jet.

I'm becoming tired of being considered "Far Right." Fiscally responsible citizens with a healthy respect for our original constitution and purpose are now labelled radicals and extremists. The scary part of that is it is starting to grow roots

You are right on point, 'they' keep putting it out there until the the phone zombies finally regurgitate it as fact. If we can't make the press play fair though, we can't stop it.

Just a thought, has anyone researched the media’s coverage under Obamacare? Are there exceptions for any of them?

I just can’t imagine that they’d be pushing so hard for it if they had to live under it.

B/S! We finally have some of these bozos fighting. No surrender, no retreat! Our God-given liberty is not subject to debate, negotiation, or compromise!

Any compromise with the Marxist/fascist left is surrendering our rights.

Surrender?

Nuts!

We have not yet begun to fight!

Do I understand the alternatives correctly?

(1) debt ceiling increase conditional upon amendment of ACHA;

(2) CR does not fund AHCA expenditures; or

(3) suspend implementation of AHCA.

Which of these three should we be supporting?

Which is Ted Cruz's favored approach?

What precisely do you mean by "suspend"? How do you force that legislation through? ... contingent upon debt ceiling increase? ... contingent upon CR passage? Is suspension really a distinction without a difference?

Why not have the true Republicans request a BINDING, updated, “Federal Financial Impact Statement” for 2012-2013 for Obama”care?”

It should take a month or two to complete, allow for a vote to delay Obama”care” for a year, and then show the great financial harm to our Economy that the Statement’s numbers will document.

Wharton, Stanford, Michigan and Princeton could also file their independent Financial Impact Statements to compare to the Office of Budget and the Congressional Budget Office Financial Impact Statements.

As B. Hussein is fond of saying: “We need to get all the facts first.”

We never win if we don’t start.

In this case, start a fight. And just for once, don’t put it off ‘til next time, don’t stall, don’t run, don’t change our mind, and don’t change the plan.

Squishy is out.

You have no idea what all can be gained by making democrats shoot their foot off, naming our poison, with their obamacare senate vote, and by finally calling out Mince McConnell, making him push defunding. One and done.

If it doesn’t work, talk to us then.
