Israel under pressure to give up chemical, nuclear weapons
The Jerusalem Post ^ | 9/18/2013 | Linda Gradstein

The United States-Russian deal for the destruction of Syria's huge chemical weapons stocks caused Israelis to breathe an audible sigh of relief.

Many expected that a U.S. strike would push either Syria or its ally Hezbollah tio retaliate by attacking Israel. Over the past few weeks, thousands of Israelis, not known for their patience, spent hours waiting in line for government-issued gas masks.

Yet the deal also increases pressure on Israel to get rid of its chemical and, even more troubling to the Jewish state, its nuclear stockpile. If Syria must get rid of its chemical weapons, the reasoning goes, why can't Israel do the same?

... Israel has always kept a low profile when it comes to its own chemical weapons program. They signed the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in 1982 but never ratified it, which means that Israel considers itself bound by the spirit of the treaty, but not legally obligated to obesrve it.

I have previously said that Israel was under no obligation (when being hit by Hezbollah rockets) to respond proportionally, which the UN harped that Israel wasn't doing. Why should they have to respond proportionally?

Secondly, why does the U.S. seem to always call the shots for Israel? Are they not an independent nation? If they want to defend themselves against Syria (which they have in bombing a nuclear facility) and Iraq (the same) and Iran, then are they free to do so?

Nevertheless, it would be best if Syria, Isreal, Iran, etc, etc let go of chemical and nuclear weapons. If not, this will continue to be a thorn in the ME that will continue to fester.

Just me two cents...

Israel can take all the pressure this piss ant little President has to give. She knows that her final option of delivering all those fricking Muslims to their Allah is in her hands if she needs it.

The rest of the world can suck it.

Israel is the LAST people on the planet who should be asked to disarm themselves.

The problem with your analysis is that Israel would be disarming itself with no assurance any other Middle East country would comply.

Do I honestly think that any of them - Syria, Iran, Israel - will give up any chem weapons? IMHO, nope.

Will Israel, Iran, Pakistan, etc, gice up their nuke programs?

IMHO, nope.

To destroy Israel with unconventional weapons is to destroy the Dome of the Rock.

If Islam is willing to destroy its second most religious facility, then I would guess Mecca and Qom is in play.

I agree nobody's going to give up anything. But what the Putin deal can do is take chemical weapons off the table for both sides. The rebels can't use them and blame Syria. Syria can't use them if they don't have them, or are claiming they don't have them.

Why can't the whole world just rise up and say we're sick of war?

I have no doubt that Israel will relinquish some of their tactical nuclear weapons... at a time and target of their own choosing.

I hope Israel stands fast and keep all their weapons.
Only a liberal or a fool (but I repeat myself) would believe disarming Israel would make the Middle East a safer place.

“If Syria must get rid of its chemical weapons, the reasoning goes, why can’t Israel do the same?”

Reasoning? There’s no reasoning there.

Israel must and will retain the capability to deter enemies and defend itself against vastly larger forces.
