In public shift, Israel calls for Assad's fall

Israel wants to see Syrian President Bashar al-Assad toppled, its ambassador to the United States said on Tuesday, in a shift from its non-committal public stance on its neighbor's civil war.

Even Assad's defeat by al Qaeda-aligned rebels would be preferable to Damascus's current alliance with Israel's arch-foe Iran, Ambassador Michael Oren said in an interview with the Jerusalem Post.

His comments marked a move in Israel's public position on Syria's two-and-1/2-year-old war.

"Really stupid of Bibi to go down this road."

Someone (I wonder who /s) must have really twisted Bibi arm.

So Assad falls and who gets the power, the Muslim Brotherhood again?

I don't see how that's gonna end well for Syria's Christians.

And if al Qaeda-aligned rebels took power in Syria, they wouldn’t be allied with Iran?

I think on a whim they go out nightly from all sides to kill Christians, which of course has crossed the most important Obama red line of all... NOT!

All Bibi and Oren have unleashed are words. To curry favor with US neo-cons (like McCain) and Obama

I don’t think the Israeli gov’t is inclined one way or another

Assad is sending his chemical weapons to Hezbollah:

Could be the reason behind this change in Israeli policy.

I don’t understand this. The regime that replaces Assad will be no more friendly to Israel.

The criticism here of Netanyahu for stating the obvious is a bit over the top. Our (America’s) main strategic interest in all of this is suppressing Sunni extremism. Israel’s got that particular situation on lock. The threat of the Hezbollah/Syria/Iran/Russia axis is much more compelling to them than hand-wringing over Al Qaeda. Hezbollah has thousands of missiles pointed at their major cities, supplied by Iran through Syria, Iran’s nuclear program is proceeding unabated, and the US has shown itself to be weak willed about WMD use and proliferation. They’d almost certainly be better off with a regime collapse and a partition of Syria.

Then let the Israelis topple Assad. On their dime. Using their army and air force.

“Really stupid of Bibi to go down this road.”

Agreed. But heck, it’s his neck of the woods, and at the end of the day I really don’t care whether Assad stays or goes as long as the U.S. doesn’t get involved either way. I’m for a massive pullout of the U.S. in the Middle East in terms of military and economic aid in any form, and I bet that would go a long way in reducing threats against the U.S.

Good, let Israel send their troops to fight alongside the “Syrian rebels” here then if they want this.

Really stupid if Israel goes down this route. However, they may have a different idea in calling for Assad’s topple. Perhaps, they may attempt to have more involvement in Syria’s new regime and government? We don’t know exactly how Israeli assets would be dedicated in Syria. They may be going after both sides for the sake of their country’s security.
